Air Jordan 5 Release Dates

Inspired by American World War II fighter planes, the Air Jordan 5 was originally released in 1990. With Tinker Hatfield at the helm of the design again, Nike had another instant classic on their hands with the AJ 5. With its first-ever use of 3M reflective material on the tongue, shark tooth design on the midsole, and plastic netting on the tongue and midfoot, Michael Jordan’s fifth signature sneaker was a statement maker.

In 1990 the Air Jordan 5 made its debut. The third consecutive MJ sneaker designed by Tinker Hatfield, WWII fighter planes came to life on this silhouette, taking flight on the hardwood. The AJ 5 sported 3M reflective detailing, Nike Air branding, plastic netting, shark tooth accents, visible Air in the heel, and translucent hits on the outsole. Lacelocks were also included with the Air Jordan 5 for additional lockdown support. It was the first Air Jordan to come with this accessory.

The Air Jordan 5 was initially released in four colorways: White Black Fire Red, Black Metallic Silver, Grape, and Fire Red. Mars Blackmon again appeared in ad campaigns, along with MJ’s famous “Wings” poster. The AJ 5 also made it onto the screen of televisions across the globe, worn on foot by Will Smith in the classicFresh Prince of Bel-Air series.

Since 2000, we have seen the Air Jordan 5 Retro in various OG and new colorways, which we still see today. Collaborators, including OFF-White, DJ Khaled, A Ma Maniere, Trophy Room, Supreme, and more, have all been fortunate enough to design their own exclusive AJ 5. Some of them made it to retail, while others did not. Some new colorways have even ranked up there next to the OG’s, such as the Doernbecher, Bin23, Tokyo, and Raging Bulls. Thirty-plus years later, the AJ 5 is still as iconic as ever.

Originally retailing for $125, the Air Jordan 5's retail price has increased through the years and now has a sticker price of $200 for men, $150 for GS, $90 for PS, and $75 for TD. Retail also increases depending on the colorway/release, occasionally up to $275. Find all the Jordan 5's past and present on Sole Retriever today!
