Whoever said the sequel could never be better than the original has never seen the Air Max 90. The 1990 entry of the Air Max line is hailed as one of the most iconic running sneakers of all time. The sneaker was originally called the Air Max III and ultimately renamed a decade later as Nike developed a yearly Air Max cadence. The AM90 hit shelves and was immediately adopted into pop culture across TV commercials, music videos, and everything in between.
Designed by Tinker Hatfield, the Air Max 90 originally released in a light and breathable mesh and suede. The uppers, heel, and midsoles have serrated tabs that visually add depth to the sneaker's overall design. The outsoles have a pattern that resembles a trail weaving through the midfoot to the heel. The AM90 kept the visible airbag in the midsole and improved on every design aspect featured in previous Air Max models.
The Air Max 90 is available in many sneaker stores at any given time. While they may no longer be considered a top choice for modern running, they can be found in the lifestyle section of any major sneaker retailer like Foot Locker, JD Sports, etc. Smaller boutiques like Undefeated and Sneaker Politics will stock the AM90, however, Nike's SNKRS app and website are primary sources for purchase.
The Air Max 90 originally came in only one colorway, Infrared, which was also featured on the Air Jordan 6 the following year. Since then, there have been countless colorways and variations of the sneaker. Viotechs, Crepes, and Warhawks are just a few of the more famous pairs but you can see way more on our list of the Top 25 AM90 Colorways.
