Patta’s Co-Founder Guillaume Schmidt Teases The Patta x Nike Cryoshot Mercurial R9
Published
The #bootsonlysummer trend had its flash in the pan moment online, but Nike and other footwear labels have seen the demand behind off-the-pitch soccer cleats. Over at adidas, they’re getting ready to introduce the F50 Adiframe Walkable soccer shoe, but Nike is also entering this game with the recently unveiled Nike Cryoshot technology. Cryoshot allows for cleated soccer boots to be worn off the pitch as a clear plastic cover is attached to the sole unit, providing stability on flat, hard surfaces. Adding more fuel to the fire is a potential collaboration with Amsterdam-based label Patta.
Guillaume Schmidt, one of Patta's co-founders, took to his Instagram page to showcase an image of Nike’s new Cryoshot technology on one of the most popular soccer cleat designs of all time—the Nike Mercurial R9. The soccer cleat was made famous by the Brazilian soccer legend Ronaldo (R9, not Cristiano Ronaldo), who wore the pair during the 1998 World Cup, in which Brazil lost to France in the final 3-0.

The pair pictured here is a retro version of the Mercurial R9 with the Cryoshot sole unit applied to the cleated outsole. As for the color palette, we see the Netherlands’ classic orange hue applied to the trim of the black paneling on the upper and to the branding features. Included in this are the midfoot Swoosh and Patta text on the tongue. New to this version of Ronaldo’s classic boot is a long folded tongue, which comes constructed out of black leather and features debossed Patta branding.
The Patta x Nike Cryoshot Mercurial R9 has no confirmed release info, but it’s likely the pair drops before the end of 2025 through Patta, Nike, and select retailers online and in-store.
