Sneaker Rivals: Orlando Magic versus Detroit Pistons

The prevailing narrative of the NBA Playoffs is that young teams don’t just show up and win a championship right away. It doesn’t matter if they are an eighth seed with barely any hopes of stealing even one game or a higher seed facing off a more experienced squad; at some point, the reality hits them that they are not quite ready yet for the high stakes and shiny spotlight of playoff basketball. From legends like Michael Jordan to the late Kobe Bryant to LeBron James and more recent champs like the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Boston Celtics, they all had to experience a few humbling losses before eventually reaching the ultimate goal.

And that’s why this year’s Detroit Pistons, the #1 seed in the Eastern Conference, is so intriguing. Two seasons ago, they posted a record of 14-68 that included a record-tying 28-straight losses. A year later, they improved on their win total by 30 games and made the playoffs.

Last week, they finished the regular season with a 60-22 record, capping off one of the greatest turnarounds in NBA history. Cade Cunningham, a former #1 draft pick who was in tears during the Pistons 28-losing streak, now has an opportunity to break through and prove why Nike made him their next signature athlete.

It’s not the same as MJ having to deal with getting knocked around by the Celtics and then the Pistons early in his career, but this new generation of Deeeeeetroit basketball has kind of already been through the mud. Maybe they are ready…

Well, that would have been the narrative if the Pistons hadn’t lost to the #8 seed Orlando Magic in Game 1 of the first round of the playoffs. Funny how that happens.

The Magic are another team also trying to figure out if they can have a Pistons-like rise from mediocrity. Like Cunningham, they are led by a former #1 overall draft pick in Paolo Banchero, who had a hot start to his career but has yet to make the leap to the next level. Signed to Jordan Brand, it’s unclear if they have any intention of making Banchero a signature athlete now that a spot is open after reports of Zion Williamson’s line coming to an end with the Jordan Zion 4. What could help that situation become a little clearer is a strong performance for Paolo and the Magic in the playoffs.

Or it could end in a gentleman’s sweep with the Pistons winning the next four games in a row. Either way, it will be an interesting watch both on the court and on their feet. Beyond Cunningham and Banchero, there are a few sneaker shockers from both teams that give them a little more spice from your typical matchup.

Orlando Magic

Starters: Paolo Banchero (Jordan Brand), Franz Wagner (adidas), Desmond Bane (Nike), Jalen Suggs (ANTA), Tristan Da Silva (Nike)

Sixth Man: Jonathan Isaac (Unitus)

Desmond Bane, Paolo Banchero, and Franz Wagner

I know what you’re thinking, so let’s start with the names that you might have never heard of. Jonathan Isaac is the founder of Unitus, a Christian footwear and apparel brand. His signature shoe line is called the Judah and is now in its second iteration. A cursory glance at the Unitus website reveals that they not only have the Judah 1, the Judah 1 Low, and the Judah 2, but also the Fortra running shoe and the Sedura slides. The top line feature of every sneaker is that they include a different visible Bible verse. Isaac is currently sidelined with a left knee sprain that he suffered in March.

As the recipient of both general release and player-exclusive versions of the Air Jordan 40, there is a path for Paolo Banchero to get the nod for a Jordan signature line. It is truly going to come down to whether he can lead the Magic to more than perfunctory first-round appearances where they put up a decent fight but ultimately go down in five or six games.

Along with balling on the court, he needs to find some sort of hook or personality quirk that will get people to pay attention. One way to do that is to emphasize his family background, which Jordan is doing with the release of a special women’s-exclusive Jordan Heir Series 2 colorway. The pair is a tribute to his grandmother Sheila and his mother, Rhonda Smith-Banchero, who played and coached in the WNBA.

After wearing Jordan Brand in Michigan and then Nike in the pros, Franz Wagner made the switch to adidas this past November alongside his brother and Magic teammate Moritz. It’s a full-circle moment for the brothers as they were both born and raised in Germany and played for clubs that were sponsored by German-based adidas. Wagner recently debuted a PE colorway of the adidas Dame X to end the season and a grey colorway of the adidas Fear of God III during the playoffs.

Unfortunately, while adidas gained the Wagner brothers, it looks like they may have lost Jalen Suggs to a competitor. Frequently seen in Hardens, Dame, and DONs, Suggs made the switch to ANTA over the last few weeks and has been wearing various colorways of the ANTA Kai 1. While no announcement has been made as of this post, if there was any doubt about why he made the leap, he even wore the Nike Kyrie 6 immediately after he finished up with adidas and before he began wearing ANTA.

Tristan Da Silva, Jalen Suggs, and Jonathan Isaac

Rounding out the Magic sneaker roster are Desmond Bane and Tristan Da Silva in LeBrons and Kobes, respectively. Bane might have had a few heated moments with LeBron James a few years back when he was still a member of the Memphis Grizzlies, but he has no issues wearing LeBron’s signature shoes like the LeBron 20 because it’s a good fit for his feet.

As for Da Silva, he can be seen in Kobes and GT Cuts of all kinds. It was quite amusing to see him wear the most popular Los Angeles-themed basketball sneaker of the moment, the Nike Kobe 6 Protro Dodgers. It works because the Dodger blue is a close cousin to Orlando Magic blue, but it is still an odd sight. Maybe that’s why Laker legend Alex Caruso went after him that one time…

Detroit Pistons

Starters: Cade Cunningham (Nike), Jalen Duren (Nike), Ausar Thompson (Nike), Isaiah Stewart (Xero), Caris LeVert (ANTA)

Sixth Man: Tobias Harris (Nike)

Jalen Duren, Cade Cunningham, and Tobias Harris

Just like Jonathan Isaac’s Christian sneaker brand, we need to briefly discuss Isaiah Stewart’s low-to-the-ground Xero X1 basketball shoes for people who are wondering about their inclusion into the lineup. Dubbed the first barefoot basketball shoe, it’s not a hollowed-out sneaker that’s devoid of technology. However, they are pushing the notion of nothingness because it is extremely lightweight, low to the ground, and is level from heel to forefoot to mimic the feel of being barefoot.

Eyebrows were raised when Nike announced that Cade Cunningham was going to receive a signature shoe line next year. Speculation hit the ‘net weeks prior to the word getting out, but the reality is that we should not have been surprised because back in early 2025, Nike created a signature logo for him that is a step above your mash-up of initials and jersey numbers. Two interlocking C’s that form a star might sound too simplistic, but the end result is a symbol that is easily translatable onto footwear and apparel. While the world waits for the debut of his signature shoe, we can enjoy Cunningham rocking the GT Cut 3 and the recently revealed ST Charge that he debuted during the All-Star Game.

Caris LeVert was part of a class of NBA players who signed with ANTA after Kyrie Irving landed with the brand. The connection all of these players had were that they are either current or former teammates of Kyrie, and all have worn the ANTA Kai line since. LeVert wore the ANTA Kai 2 for most of the regular season before switching to the ANTA Kai 3 when they were revealed earlier this year.

Even though Jalen Duren, Ausar Thompson, and Tobias Harris all wear Nike alongside Cade Cunningham, they all play very different roles for the brand. After making the All-Star Game for the first time, people are getting to see that Duren shouldn’t be confused with Andre Drummond just because they’re both Pistons All-Stars who wore #0*. Another reason you shouldn’t confuse the two is through their sneakers, as Duren wears KDs and Giannis Freaks while Drummond was signed to Jordan Brand during his Pistons tenure.

Isaiah Stewart, Ausar Thompson, and Caris LeVert

Like his brother Amen Thompson of the Houston Rockets, Ausar Thompson wears variations of the GT Cut 3 and 4 in general release and player-exclusive colorways, although he wore the outdoor-ready GT Cut Cross to Game 1 of the playoffs.

Tobias Harris might be the sneaker sixth man of the Pistons, but he is no slouch in that department. With over $300 million in contracts despite never making an All-Star team, Harris makes headlines for two reasons: the contracts that he and his team have expertly negotiated for himself, and the sneaky cool player exclusives he breaks out with that would make even PJ

Tucker blush.
