Nike has been obsessed with innovation since its start, and sometimes that means a lot of hits and misses. The Swoosh’s running department has been on a hot streak lately, but remembering past failures is what keeps us honest, and for next month’s past-meets-present International Running Pack, Nike is channeling the good and bad from their decades in the game. Included in this is a Vomero 18 colorway inspired by the once-recalled Nike LD-1000.
Releasing as part of a four-pack of Nike runners set to drop for the track and field championships in Tokyo next month, the International Running Pack Vomero 18 takes on the iconic gold and red colorway from the LD-1000, blending shades of sulfur yellow throughout the engineered mesh upper and stacked sole packed with ZoomX and ReactX foam. The sunshine is interrupted by a bright red Swoosh across the side and logo accents on the tongue and toebox. The heel counter and pull tab get a hit of bright orange to complete the vintage look.

Nike Vomero 18 International Running Pack
The LD-1000, first released in 1978, was Nike’s first long-distance specific running shoe (hence the name). Designed by Bill Bowerman, it featured a classic waffle sole and a brand new, extra-wide flared heel that was supposed to help runners preserve their knees and joints. Unfortunately, not every new technology is a success, and if you landed on the flared heel wrong, the shoe was prone to causing injury. Nike immediately recalled and retooled the shoe and waited for backlash, but it never came. In his autobiography Shoe Dogs, Nike founder Phil Knight recalled the LD-1000 recall fiasco with pride.
"No other shoe company was trying new things, so our efforts, successful or not, were seen as noble," he wrote. "All innovation was hailed as progressive, forward-thinking. Just as failure didn't deter us, it didn't seem to diminish the loyalty of our customers."
Today, the LD-1000 is back on the market in full force, with a slightly less treacherous heel. The vintage runner was retroed in 2024, and has seen a handful of new colorways for the new era, including collaborations with Stussy and size?.
The Nike Vomero 18 International Running Pack will be released exclusively at the Union Running Dept. by Nike in Tokyo on August 30, 2025, followed by a Japan-wide release on Sept 5, 2025, and a global release through select Nike retailers in-store and online on September 10, 2025. Available in men’s sizes, the retail price is set at $170. Download the Sole Retriever mobile app to stay updated on the latest releases, raffles, news, and more in the sneaker and streetwear world.
