During the early ‘70s, Nike had a hard time discovering its own identity. Did it want to focus solely on running shoes or taper out and explore other options as well? Towards the end of the decade, the Beaverton-based brand was approached by aerospace engineer Marion Frank Rudy with a new opportunity: fitting an “airbag” onto a sneaker for added cushioning. While this concept sounded absolutely terrible on paper at the time, it made a whole lot of sense. Now, 45 years later, Air technology is still being used today. To celebrate this and the man behind it all, the Nike Air Max Plus "Marion Frank Rudy" has been revealed.
Part of a much larger collection that includes an Air Max 90 and Air Max 97, the third and final addition to the range takes on the classic Air Max Plus model. Boasting a breathable mesh base, translucent palm tree-inspired paneling embraces the entire upper, while yellow accenting runs down the center of the shoe. Smooth leather mudguards surround the outside of the AMP, and moving down below you’ll find an extra chunky Tuned Air unit that’s decorated with “Est. 1998” around the heel. To round it all off, the lace tips are printed with “M. Frank Rudy” as an ode to the inventor of Air.
The Nike Air Max Plus Marion Frank Rudy is set to release in Holiday 2022. It will drop at Nike, via the SNKRS app, and at select retailers worldwide, in-store and online.
