Reebok Kamikaze Shoes
Ricardo Vestuti was given the task of designing Shawn Kemp’s first signature shoe, the Reebok Kamikaze 1, in 1994. Oddly enough, Vestuti admits he was not familiar with Kemp’s game when designing the silhouette; instead, Vestuti drew inspiration from the outdoor and hardcourt feel of Anita Pantin’s crown of thorns painting. Reebok announced on March 9, 2022, that the brand will rename the Kamikaze to Hurrikaze to pay respect for those affected by World War II. Relive Seattle Supersonic themed Reebok Kamikazes here.
The Reebok Kamikaze, a basketball shoe released in the mid-90s, is most commonly associated with NBA star Shawn Kemp, who famously wore the sneakers during his career. The Kamikaze's bold, zig-zag upper and rugged durability echo Kemp's high-energy, aggressive style of play on the court.
This classic basketball silhouette has been released in a multitude of colorways, embodying the vibrant and eclectic spirit of the 90s. Among the most iconic variations are the "Sonics" colorway, paying homage to Kemp's time with the Seattle SuperSonics, and the "All-Star" colorway, representing Kemp's multiple All-Star appearances.
Over time, the Kamikaze line has evolved, incorporating modern design elements while still paying homage to its roots. Collaborations with brands such as BAIT and artists like Swizz Beatz have resulted in exciting reinterpretations of this classic basketball sneaker. The Reebok Kamikaze, with its unique design and storied history, continues to be a staple within the basketball shoe community.
