Nike’s running archives are full of classic silhouettes that defined their eras and the Swoosh as a whole. One of these is the Waffle Racer, which features the waffle traction pattern invented by Bill Bowerman, which has become a signature part of Nike’s identity. Though running tech has advanced considerably since the ‘70s, Nike loves to look back at the sneakers that paved the way for modern runners, as is the case with the upcoming Pegasus 41 Tokyo World Athletics.
Coming as part of a larger capsule celebrating the upcoming World Athletics Championship in Tokyo, Japan, the series sees Nike harken back to vintage and archival performance runners and apply their design details to modern silhouettes. We got our first glimpse at this when images of a Pre Montreal-inspired Vaporfly 4 emerged last week, and when photos of the Pegasus Premium Forrest Gump, inspired by the Nike Cortez, landed online weeks back. But now with a third pair, it’s obvious what Nike is doing for the event.
