Steve Prefontaine, one of the most prolific runners of all time, took the track in multiple Nike silhouettes during his time in the spotlight. One pair, the Pre Montreal, directly inspires an upcoming colorway of the Nike Zoom Vaporfly 4, which will launch to coincide with the 2025 World Athletics Championship taking place in Tokyo, Japan.
The Vaporfly 4's performance-oriented design remains intact, but Nike applies a thin graphic pattern to make the sneaker appear like the Team USA colorway of the Pre Montreal shoe from 1972. The red, white, and blue upper from this pair is directly translated, as we see the front half of the model coated in blue, the back half in red, and the Swoosh, tongue, and eyelets come in a white hue.

Outside of the obvious nods to the Pre Montreal, Nike first references the 2025 World Athletics Championship through the Nike INTL logo on the heel tab. Here, we also see a folded heel tab containing a small Swoosh, mimicking the Pre Montreal. Final details include the blue and faux-aged Vaporfly 4 midsole, which contains ZoomX foam and a Flyplate, globe logos near the lateral heel of the sole unit, and the outsole, featuring zonal traction near the forefoot and heel.
The Nike Zoom Vaporfly 4 Pre Montreal Tokyo World Athletics will release on September 10, 2025, through Nike and select retailers online. Available in men’s sizing, the retail price is $270.
