Few American athletes have ever captured the public’s attention - and made them care about soccer - like Mia Hamm. When Hamm helped the US secure a World Cup title in 1999, she cemented herself in the same class as Jordan, Brady, and Barry Bonds, complete with the Wheaties boxes and signature shoes. Now, Hamm’s Nike Zoom M9 cleat is back for another World Cup, but this time for the fans in the stands, instead of the players on the pitch.
The Virgil Abloh Archives x Nike Cryoshot Zoom M9 is the Team USA collab pair from Nike’s new X2 collab series, which pairs seven national football teams with seven collaborators from the streetwear and sneaker world, along with seven local charities focused on expanding the reach of youth sports in the selected countries. Bringing the collection back to ‘99, VAA added an encased sole Cryoshot design to Hamm’s Zoom M9 cleat, trying to conjure some winning vibes with the US pair.
Featuring a monochrome white upper, the Cryoshot Zoom M9 features quilted paneling across the upper, criss-crossing the toebox and running beneath the side panel Swoosh. Iconic Virgil Abloh accents are added with “AIR” branding on the medial side of the heel and “V.A.A. for Nike MIA HAMM Beaverton, Oregon, USA 1999” on the medial side. In the Cryoshot heel, red cleats show through the clear cover to match the red Swoosh on the tongue.
