Paul Rodriguez Previews Tom Penny-Inspired Tan Suede Nike SB P Rod 1 Retro

For most of the footwear world, tan suede shoes are a direct callback to the classic 6-Inch Timberland Boot. In skateboarding, the inspiration is a little different. For his latest Nike SB P Rod 1 Retro colorway, Paul Rodriguez showed off a light tan monochrome suede colorway inspired by one of skateboarding’s great legendary figures, Tom Penny, and his favorite shoe, the brown suede eS Accel.

The Nike SB Paul Rodriguez Zoom Air Low Light British Tan is made to skate in a full coat of light brown suede. The Swoosh gets a bubbled-up texture, and the heel panel and back of the sides are done in the classic quilt-stitched PR monogram print. Otherwise, the basic colorway is simple to replicate one of skating’s classic core models from the first shoe brand to sponsor Rodriguez.

As a young buck, Rodriguez was sponsored by eS skateboards just like his favorite skater, Tom Penny. When the opportunity to kickstart the Nike SB program and become the first skater with a Nike pro shoe came up, though, Rodriguez departed eS and started what has become a 20-year run with the Swoosh. Still, Penny’s iconic footage in brown eS Accels continues to inspire P-Rod and skaters everywhere, no matter what brand of shoes they wear.
