While Eliud Kipchoge technically was the first human to run a sub-2-hour marathon during the Ineos 1:59 challenge in 2019, that didn’t make the official record books due to pacemakers and other factors. It’s been nearly seven years since this event took place, but we finally have not one, but two sub-2-hour marathons in the books after the 2026 London Marathon.

Sebastian Sawe shattered the previous marathon record by over one minute, clocking in his 26.2-mile run at 1:59:30. Fellow adidas athlete Yomif Kejelcha was not far behind with a time of 1:59:41. On the women's side, Tigist Assefa made history by breaking the women's marathon record, finishing the race at 2:15:41. All three athletes raced in the 2026 London Marathon in adidas’ latest super shoe, the adidas Adizero Adios Pro Evo 3, the first model from The Three Stripes that weighs less than 100g.

The German sportswear brand introduced the Adios Pro Evo series in 2023 with the $500 super shoe that made headlines throughout the running community. That sneaker weighed an eye-catching 138g, 40% lighter than any other super shoe adidas had created at the time. The second iteration improved on the cushioning by adding 3mm more of Lightstrike Pro Evo foam, resulting in a 5% increase in energy return, while also maintaining its 138g weight. Now, as mentioned above, the Adios Pro Evo 3 is under 100g, coming in at 98g to be exact.

After shattering the record, Sebastian said, “To break the world record is something I have dreamed about for a long time, and to achieve it means so much to me and to the sport of running. It reflects the hard work behind the scenes, the support of my team, and the role of innovation in helping me push beyond limits. I’m honored to be part of a new chapter for the sport.”

Those interested in the adidas Adizero Adios Pro Evo 3 can try to secure a pair on April 27, 2026, as adidas is dropping a limited amount of the $500 super shoe via its website. A wider launch is slated for the fall marathon season. For more updates on the latest happenings in the sneaker world, download the Sole Retriever mobile app.
