adidas Adizero Tier List

It can be a bit confusing when shopping for running sneakers. Every brand offers a wide range of models that meet different needs. You’re not going to need the $300 super shoe if you’re just looking to jog a few times a week, and the same is true on the inverse. Someone training for a 10K or a marathon will greatly benefit from purchasing a higher-end distance-running shoe.

History of the adidas Adizero Line

Over at adidas, the current focus is on the Adizero line. Beginning in 2004, The Three Stripes wanted to develop a shoe that “would really redefine the meaning of fast.” Japanese designer Mr. Toshiaki Omori was tasked with helping develop this new silhouette, and over the course of four years, he brought his “inside out” design philosophy to life.

Then, in 2008, long-distance runner Haile Gebrselassie laced up the first adidas Adizero Adios prototype for the Berlin Marathon. He broke the world record by 29 seconds, finishing with a time of 2:03:59. While this finishing time has since been shattered, it’s still adidas Adizero that helped fuel the history-making run, with Sebastian Sawe wearing the adidas Adizero Adios Pro Evo 3 when he finished the London Marathon in 1:59:30.

Ever since Haile gave the world a first look at the power of the Adizero line, The Three Stripes has gone all-in on the franchise, launching a slew of models that cater to runners in all categories. Now, with the recent introduction of the adidas Adizero Pacer, their hierarchy of models is even clearer.

We’ll highlight the different levels and tiers of adidas Adizero running sneakers, from budget-friendly introductory models for casual runners to the ultra-expensive super shoes made for elite competition.

$100 Tier: Adizero Pacer

Everyone has to start somewhere. You’re not coming out of the gate running 4-minute miles. So if you’re just getting into the sport of running, need something casual for quick trips to the store, or want to partake in light jogs a few times a week, the Adizero Pacer is perfect. The $100 Adizero running shoe is still a solid choice for use in training, but it doesn’t come with the bells and whistles you’ll see with other models on this list.

Inside the Adizero Pacer, adidas uses LIGHTSTRIKE foam, which is slightly different compared to the LIGHTSTRIKE PRO in other adidas running sneakers. It’s lightweight and far ahead of generic EVA foam. This is combined with the lightweight engineered mesh upper. Underneath, the outsole uses ADIWEAR rubber.

The Adizero Pacer cuts down on the high-end proprietary technology to help lower the price. The general shape of the shoe is in line with other models, so don’t worry, it’s still stylish.

$150 Tier: Adizero Evo SL

Winner of the Runner’s World Shoe of the Year Award in 2025, the adidas Adizero Evo SL has become a certified hit amongst professional and casual runners alike. You can find these on feet at the grocery store, in run clubs, on tracks, and at the gym; it’s a shoe that transitions well between lifestyle and performance.

The adidas Adizero Evo SL uses a thick stack of LIGHTSTRIKE PRO foam for its cushioning system, which is bouncy, cloud-like, responsive, and provides excellent energy return. Like its cheaper counterpart, the Adizero Pacer, the Evo SL uses an engineered mesh upper, but this one is even lighter and more breathable. For the outsole, adidas taps rubber maker Continental for its high-quality proprietary rubber compound.

Since the $150 price point hits that sweet spot between budget and high-end, the Adizero Evo SL is a great pick-up for runners at all levels. And luckily, you can find select colorways for even cheaper.

$250 Tier: Adizero Adios Pro 4

This one is a bigger step up from the Adizero Pacer and Adizero Evo SL. The adidas Adizero Adios Pro 4 is one of The Three Stripes’ elite running sneakers, and its $250 price point reflects that. If you’re someone who is just casually training or hitting the occasional run club, this is going to be overkill for sure.

The shoe is designed with long-distance and marathon runners in mind. It combines a dual-layered LIGHTSTRIKE PRO midsole with ENERGYRODS 2.0 technology, the latter an alternative to the traditional carbon fiber plates found in most high-end running shoes. The ENERGYRODS 2.0 system mimics the bones of the human foot to allow different areas to flex based on your stride. Continental rubber is used for the Lighttraxion outsole, with additional traction placed on the toe for more support.

Although the shoe does retail for $250, you can find pairs on sale for under $200. If you can snag it on a deep discount, it’s definitely worth your money, even as a more casual runner, but this will really benefit those who are looking for high-end performance in races or sanctioned events.

$500 Tier: Adizero Adios Pro Evo 3

The adidas Adizero Adios Pro Evo 3 is adidas’ most advanced super shoe to date. It’s helped elite marathon runners shatter records, including Sebastian Sawe, who ran the first official sub-2-hour marathon back in April, and it’s incredibly hard to find. The shoe retails for $500 and was ultra-limited when it released right after the London Marathon in April, but there was a small restock in May at Dick’s Sporting Goods. Another restock is planned for the fall.

Some shoes can claim to be lightweight, but the Adios Pro Evo 3 tops them all. It’s only 97 grams, 30% lighter than its predecessor, while adding an additional 11% to forefoot energy return. Embedded within the midsole is ENERGYRIM technology, a carbon-integrated system that supports the foam for extra stability. Of course, the upper has to be ultra-lightweight to reach that 97 gram total weight for the shoe, and the stripped-back and engineered mesh is inspired by kitesurfing sails. Some sections are virtually see-through with how thin it is, but it’s still structured enough to contain your foot.

Unless you’re looking to become a professional runner, the adidas Adizero Adios Pro Evo 3 is overkill. You’ll be lucky if you can even find a pair for the $500 price point, as pairs are selling for way above retail on the secondary market, and again, this is strictly for elite-level athletes and professionals.
