New Balance is never afraid to push boundaries. The Boston-based brand might seem like it keeps it safer than the blades on a state-of-the-art ride-on mower for its paternal clientele, but the dad shoe trendsetters have been building leading running, basketball, skateboarding, and baseball shoes for years. Now, the Made in USA team is bringing the brand’s wealth of performance tech to everyday wear, introducing the 2040v5.
Reviving a legacy Made in USA model that always carried a premium price, the 2040v5 stands out most for its $400 tag. From there, New Balance does a pretty good job of justifying itself, combining premium nubuck leather on the upper with a full-length carbon fiber plate and a trio of cushioning that mixes FuelCell, ABZORB SBS & ENCAP from across the New Balance product line.

"Every detail was evaluated through the lens of craft, performance, and material integrity," Brian Lynn, Global Vice President of Lifestyle Product at New Balance, said. "Free from trend-driven thinking or unnecessary compromise, the team focused on a singular objective: creating the ultimate expression of Made in USA footwear."
The New Balance 2040v5 will be released August 20, 2026, in North America through New Balance and select retailers in-store and online, followed by a global release in May of next year. Available in unisex sizing, the retail price is set at $400. To keep up with all the latest from New Balance’s Made in USA program, download the Sole Retriever App.
