adidas has unveiled the next big thing, the adidas Zponge. This groundbreaking design offers a unique aesthetic, resembling walking on sponges, that provides lightweight cushioning. Launching alongside an Ice Yellow Core Black iteration, the Zponge is set to take over in 2025.
The adidas Apollo, an old track and field shoe, provided the design blueprint for the Zponge’s upper. This blend of retro and modern elements makes the adidas Zponge a fusion of old and new. Found in the depths of the archive at Herzogenaurach, the shoe was chosen because of its low profile and also its name, as Apollo will forever evoke memories of the space program and humans breaking new ground by exploring the universe.
A nylon blend is used to construct the upper of the Zponge, adorned in tactile blue hues. The material is incredibly lightweight and offers maximum flexibility and breathability to the wearer. Serrated Three Stripes contrast in core black tones along the midfoot and again at the rear for the supportive heel panel. A darker shade of blue is utilized for the tongue and inner collar lining.
Trefoil branding appears at the heel and again on the retro-inspired tongue graphic. On the sidewall, linear adidas branding accents with black against blue for a striking look. Aside from the stitched toebox, a series of perforations is also found.
Underfoot, the Zponge midsole, highlighted in wonder mauve, delivers exceptional cushioning while ensuring a feather-like feel due to being so lightweight. A light gum-colored rubber outsole provides grip and durability, perfect for style and performance. The design of a new shoe is always a challenge, and when it incorporates the latest technology, it is a truly daunting challenge, but one adidas has met head-on.
The adidas Zponge Tactile Blue Core Black was released today, December 18, 2024, and is available now via adidas and select retailers online and in-store. Coming in unisex sizing, retail is $130.
