Topps Brings Rookie Debut Patch Autographs To The NFL

Topps’ Rookie Debut Patch Autograph program has produced a number of viral moments for the company during the past several years and now they are bringing the concept to the NFL. All NFL rookies will now include an “NFL Debut” patch stitched onto their jerseys. Following the first regular season game that they play in, the patch will be removed and then embedded onto a trading card that the rookie will sign. According to Topps, the cards will be inserted into a future release in 2027. If precedent from other sports is followed, redemptions for these cards will likely be found in Topps Chrome Update Football (or as old trading card fans used to call them back in the days, Series 2).

Previous Attempts at a Debut Patch

While the NFL Debut patch design is new for this upcoming season, this is not the first time the league have played around with the idea of commemorating a rookie’s debut time with a unique marker on their jersey. In 2023, the NFL announced that every rookie’s first game jersey will include an “NFL PREM1ERE” patch*. These jerseys were then gifted to the players because in the words of Troy Vincent, former Philadelphia Eagles All-Pro and current Executive Vice President of Football Operations, “[a]n NFL rookie's first game marks an unforgettable occasion in his football experience and we are excited to preserve this moment and honor this milestone.”

*Get it? It’s “Premiere” but it’s a “1” instead of an “I” so it’s “PREM1ERE”... I’ll stop now…

In 2025, when Topps reacquired the NFL license after losing it in 2016, they removed the PREM1ERE patches from these first game jerseys to essentially create Rookie Debut Patch Autograph cards. It’s the same concept, but with different branding. For this upcoming season, Topps has replaced the PREM1ERE patches with their own patch design to streamline the branding across MLB, the NBA, and now the NFL. Hopefully the rookies get to at least keep their first game-worn jerseys just sans the Debut Patch.

Topps Rookie Debut History

Since the launch of the Rookie Debut Patch Autograph cards, Topps has made mainstream headlines due to big name collectors, influencers, MLB and NBA teams putting up big time bounties to acquire the cards of Paul Skenes, Cooper Flagg, and other top rookies. Even the actual players who wore these patches and signed the cards have made offers to fans to get them back. However, the 2025 NFL PREM1ERE Patch Autograph cards have yet to bring in similar attention and big money. Topps is probably hoping the rebrand, along with a certain quarterback who was the #1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, will reverse the trend.

Since becoming the hopeful savior of the Las Vegas Raiders, football collectors have been heavily investing in Fernando Mendoza’s first appearances on cardboard. His one-of-a-kind 2025 Bowman Chrome University Superfractor autograph card in his University of Indiana uniform sold for $78,000. While he will always have a big market for his college era because he won a national championship, fans, collectors, and prospectors are hoping for even bigger things in silver and black.

Tom Brady, Las Vegas Raiders co-owner and proprietor of CardVault by Tom Brady, is no stranger to obscenely expensive rookie cards. Not only did his first year cardboard from the year 2000 go from the common bin to financing down payments on houses, he’s made headlines chasing his rookie quarterback’s top cards. Earlier this year, he put out an offer for Mendoza’s first signed NFL rookie card, a Topps Now piece celebrating his status as the #1 overall draft pick. The card is now in Brady’s possession and it’s been confirmed that the final price was both more than what the Bowman Superfractor went for. In their words, it was “life-changing money.”

What Cards Will Be Sought After?

Besides Mendoza, other Rookie Debut Patch Autograph cards that collectors are expected to chase after include Jeremiyah Love of the Arizona Cardinals, Ty Simpson of the Los Angeles Rams, Carnell Tate of the Tennessee Titans, and Jordyn Tyson of the New Orleans Saints. Another player that people might want to look out for is KC Concepcion, wide receiver for the Cleveland Browns. While draft experts have decent enough hopes for Concepcion despite playing for the Browns, there is going to be outsized attention being paid to him from NFL fans in the Philippines who are going to be doing double takes when they hear that a KC Concepcion Rookie Debut Patch Autograph went for big money when the KC Concepcion that they know is the furthest thing from the NFL.
