Signature Shoes That Already Match Every NBA Star's New Team

Ever since LeBron James made The Decision in 2010, the start of NBA free agency has become one of the most anticipated events of the entire sports calendar. Despite the action taking place behind closed doors and on social media, it’s arguable that this yearly exercise of player movement along with the trade deadline are what fans look forward to even more than most of the regular season. And while some summers that were hyped to heavens ultimately turned out to be duds, the past few weeks will go down as an all-timer with an unprecedented number of big names on the move.

So far, four future Hall of Famers with championships and NBA Finals MVPs in their resumes have either been traded or announced that they will not be returning to their team. Right below that tier are a handful of players with All-Star credentials who will also be residing in new zip codes when we tip off the 2026-27 season. Not surprisingly, all of these players have signature shoe lines new and old that are going to be making some adjustments heading into the fall.

Unlike in the 90s when signature shoes were at least somewhat obligated to match the colors of the teams their athletes represented, this free-for-all era means that sneakers you could have never imagined would be used as a team shoe are now viable options for both the players and the fans. Here’s a look at what sneakers would make great picks to pair up with their new kits.

LeBron James (Philadelphia 76ers)

On a personal level, I would like to thank LeBron James for his time as a Los Angeles Laker. We got a championship, the first NBA Cup, and a number of statistical records that were broken as a Laker. Could it have been better? Yes, but that’s all in the past now.

Now that we’ve got that out of the way, Philly just became the most must-watch team this coming season, and James doesn’t even need to be the first, second, or even third option. If he can be the most overqualified fourth or fifth banana on a team that has three bona fide All-Stars and a fourth waiting in the wings, the Sixers will be the team to beat in the East. It could also be the 2026 equivalent of that Sports Illustrated cover with Dwight Howard and Steve Nash when they joined the Lakers. But because I don’t have a rooting interest this time around, yes, this is gonna be good.

The shades of blue and red are a little brighter in Philly, but LeBron fans who need sneakers to match their newly bought Sixers jerseys (that are already sold out) won’t have any trouble looking online. Nike has already brought back a number of original colorways from the Zoom Generation to the LeBron 8, and if the Sixers run it back with the iconic black unis from Allen Iverson’s prime, there are plenty of blackout sneakers from James’ catalog.

Jaylen Brown (Philadelphia 76ers)

By far the biggest and most surprising name to move this summer is 2024 Finals MVP Jaylen Brown. 2024 was two years ago. Seriously, look this up. It was just over 750 days ago that Brown was applauded for leading the Boston Celtics to their 18th championship in franchise history. To be fair, his words off the court might raise some eyebrows and his Twitch streams habitually step into cringe territory, but he’s more than just a hooper and a social media connoisseur. Brown has been very vocal about social justice and helping bring about black prosperity to the area. And now he’s gone, and to a historic rival no less, possibly because of vibes. Kids glued to a phone their negligent parents gave them have more patience than the Celtics do.

And now Brown is on a loaded team in the same conference and the same division as the team that let him go. There might not be two more exciting games this season than when he returns to Boston.

One of the ways Brown is a disruptor is through his independent athletic brand 741 Performance. Anybody who thought this was going to be an overnight success was fooling themselves, but nearly two years since its inception, the brand has been making moves and slow burning their way into prominence. Philly fans will be pleased to know that nearly every colorway of the 741 Rover will match nicely with their standard uniforms, with the notable exception being the Green Electron pair that Brown will probably never wear again unless he feels like trolling Boston in his first game back.

LaMelo Ball (Minnesota Timberwolves)

If we’re playing by Dragon Ball rules, Vegeta’s meme level scanner would have blown up the moment the Charlotte Hornets traded LaMelo Ball to Minnesota to team up with Anthony Edwards. While the move probably doesn’t push the Timberwolves above OKC or San Antonio in the Western Conference, the entertainment that the two offensive savants will provide makes them a must-see every night they are on. And with LaMelo recently becoming a father and hiring a driver who understands the concept of red lights, we might be getting the best version of the mercurial star yet.

Speaking of mercurial, LaMelo’s Puma MB line has lived up to its “Not From Here” tagline. Every new model brings an audacious design that is somehow an escalation from the previous year, which set the bar for audacity. What doesn’t get a lot of publicity are the Team Bank colorways that drop towards the end of each signature shoe’s run, which succeed in bringing a level of normalcy to the chaos. Two pairs that fans can wear immediately are the Puma MB.01 and the Puma MB.02 Low in the Team Blazing Blue colorway that fits right in with the Wolves road Icon kit. If you’re counting on LaMelo to wear the same sneakers on the court or a similar colorway in either the Puma MB.05 or the yet-to-be-revealed MB.06, you’ll be waiting a while.

Ja Morant (Portland Trail Blazers)

Sneakers That Already Work: Nike Ja 3 TB White University Red, Nike Ja 1 TB University Red White, Nike Ja 2 Nightmare

The scuttlebutt around the league is that Nike played a role in helping get Ja Morant to Portland because they want to protect the huge investment they’ve made in Morant. How that plays out remains to be seen, but there’s no disputing that the Nike Ja 3 was a breakout hit for Nike Basketball. Not only that, but the Nike Ja 4 is getting plenty of early buzz as well. For a signature shoe line with that much momentum to be derailed not by the natural decline of a star but by self-destructive tendencies would be a bummer for not just Nike but for Ja and his day ones.

Team Bank colorways are once again the way to go for Blazers fans looking to pair up their brand new #12 #1 Morant jersey. All three Ja models come in a Team Bank White and University Red colorway, although the Nike Ja 3 is worthy enough to have gotten a standalone drop. The Nightmare Ja 2 colorway always works with Blazers red with the only discrepancy being the gold swoosh.

Giannis Antetokounmpo (Miami Heat)

After what feels like the most annoyingly dramatic NBA trade saga since Dwight Howard couldn’t make up his mind whether he wanted to stay or leave Orlando, Giannis Antetokounmpo finally got his wish to move on from the only team he’s ever known. The Miami Heat is a familiar spot for superstars looking for a fresh start, dating all the way back to the 90s when NBA Hall of Fame center Alonzo Mourning was traded from Charlotte to South Beach. And now the pressure is on for Giannis to deliver a ring like Zo and Shaq and LeBron and Bosh have in the past. Anything less than a Finals appearance, which Jimmy Butler did twice, is probably seen as a failure.

Despite having a signature shoe line that’s eight models deep now with the introduction of the Giannis Freak 8, the Freaks are not what the streets are wearing. Based purely on anecdotal evidence of being outside in Southern California for the past several years, kids wear the takedown Giannis Immortality by a wide margin compared to the Freaks.

Would not be surprised if the younger Heat fans already have Immortalities in red and white ready to go. Those looking for a colorway in the non-Team Bank range will appreciate the touching Nike Zoom Freak 5 Thanks for Sharing that is a tribute by Giannis to his older brother and mentor Thanasis. And with the Heat bringing back the instantly classic Vice jersey in black this season, there is the Giannis Freak 7 Livewire colorway that is still widely available at retailers everywhere that are a perfect match.

Kawhi Leonard (Toronto Raptors*)

When news broke that Kawhi Leonard was returning to Toronto, sports media bizarrely treated the move like a gamebreaker in the Eastern Conference. Experts were declaring this a return to the upper echelon for the Raptors and that they would be equals alongside the defending champion Knicks, the Jaylen Brown-led 76ers, the still-solid Cavs, and the reloaded Heat.

Clearly, none of these people were watching the past seven years when Kawhi was in Los Angeles playing for the hometown team Clippers. No matter how well Kawhi plays this coming season, there will always be doubts about whether his body will be well enough to survive the playoffs.

But even if Leonard were unable to deliver a second championship to Toronto, that first one will live on forever thanks to an amazing buzzer-beater during Game 7 in the 2019 Eastern semifinal against the 76ers that took four bounces to go in.

Sure, the New Balance sneakers that have since been called the Four Bounces are in black, blue, and gold and don’t exactly match the Raptors standard red, black, and white, but this is one instance where it doesn’t matter.

*The trade is on hold until the NBA completes its investigation into the alleged moves the Clippers made to circumvent the salary cap. According to the Raptors, the league informed them that they would assume the risk of the results of that investigation, which could involve fines and forfeiture of draft picks.

Paul George (Boston Celtics)

Sneakers That Already Work: Nike PGs in Team Bank Colorways, Jayson Tatum’s Nike PG 1 Celtics PE

Paul George trades have a habit of working out in the long run for the teams that let go of the former superstar and current podcast host. Ask the participants of the 2025 NBA Finals if they have any regrets trading away PG. Unfortunately, the Los Angeles Clippers will not get any future benefit from trading away George because he left in free agency to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers, who are already getting an immediate return by trading George for Jaylen Brown. In other words, this move won’t truly pay off for Boston until they trade George. They better hope he doesn’t decide to retire there.

With the Nike PG 1 already getting the retro treatment, it will be interesting to see if the entire line gets a second life if George can regain some lost form and the Celtics are able to hang at the top of the Eastern Conference standings. During his rookie season, Jayson Tatum wore a simple black and green Nike PG 1 player exclusive for a handful of games before alternating between PGs and Kyries the rest of the way.
