With the 740, New Balance has arrived at a perfect middle ground, mixing a classic retro runner shape with new tooling and tech for a comfort-focused market. On its latest two-pack of 740s, New Balance is blending subtlety with a roar of loud animal print in the middle.
Subtle Safari
The New Balance 740 Safari Pack arrives in two neutral colorways, Tan and Black/White, but on both pairs, the “N” side panel logo pushes away from the otherwise monochrome uppers, pouncing in tonal leopard print spots. Besides the “N” logo though, the Safari theme disappears into the brush, leaving a standard in-line makeup on the rest of the shoes.
On the Tan pair, a full coat of soft khaki color covers the entire upper, including the laces and tonal tongue tag. The monochrome base makes the safari print logo pop in white and brown, while the midsole adds contrast in off-white and the outsole goes classic gum brown. On the Black/White pair, the same color blocking adds black to the entire mesh and synthetic upper, with white and black leopard print on the logo and a white midsole to match.
