Marty Supreme's Sneaker Game Transcends Time and Space

Today is December 2, which means we’re just 23 sleeps away from the big day… the one we’ve all been waiting for. Christmas? No. Well, technically, yeah, December 25 is Christmas but I was talking about the release of Marty Supreme, the highly anticipated new A24 original from Josh Safdie and Ronald Bronstein, the team who wrote Uncut Gems in 2019 (alongside Josh’s brother Ben). You thought I meant Christmas?

Marty Supreme transcends Christmas. Do you even DREAM BIG? Have you not watched the Zoom calls? This movie is about to change the game. Timothée is about to win his first Best Actor Oscar from the Acadamée. It’s got Tyler, the Creator, the love interest from Shallow Hal, Mr. Wonderful from Shark Tank, and FRAN DRESCHER. Like dog, how could you still be thinking about Christmas? This is it, the greatest gift we could receive.

You know what else Marty Supreme transcends? Time. The very fabric of our universe. Within the Marty Supreme universe, there are no decades or eras or sayings like “that didn’t exist then.” Because if you don’t believe, you’re just not dreaming big enough.

The film is set in the 1950s and follows Chalamet’s character Marty as he tries to take over the sport of table tennis and ultimately the world. At the 1:47 mark of the official trailer, we see Marty running through the streets, a scene that has been seen quite a few times in the lead-up to the film’s release. And every time I see clips of it, I’m reminded of how this story is bigger than time, because Marty just simply doesn’t run like someone from the 1950s. He runs with force, with grace, with scientific data and research poured into every step to ensure maximum support and velocity. So, I looked into it, because there’s just no way some cobbled-up oxford dress shoe or whatever the hell people were wearing pre-Beatles would give him the kind of agility he’s employing in the chase.

Turns out I was right. Marty wasn’t wearing some goofy black leather clompers as he raced through crowded city sidewalks in a dead sprint. Nope, he actually ran fast enough to travel through time and snag himself a state-of-the-art pair of Salomon XA Pro 3D V9, likely from our friends at StockX, since the murdered out Phantom Pewter colorway he chose is sold out in most sizes from Salomon direct. If you’re a size 11 like Chalamée, you can cop them for $189 and fly through the streets like 1950’s Marty Supreme.

Side note, if you’re wondering how I knew Rin Tim Tim’s shoe size, yes, I had to visit WikiFeet to conduct research for this story. These are the lengths (pause) this team will go for you, the reader. Do you think our competition is dipping their toes into that cesspool of a website to bring you the hard-hitting facts? Certainly not professionally, but maybe recreationally.

They don’t really show the Salomons in the trailer and they’ll likely use some Hollywood Movie Magic to remove them from the final film but they’re now part of the story regardless, showing that Timothée cares not just about fashion but function, too. A truly timeless sneaker icon.

But he’s not the only one in this movie. Tyler Okonma aka Tyler, the Creator makes his feature film debut in Marty Supreme after already having conquered music, fashion, and footwear. The Grammy Award-winning artist and Supreme Photo Tee model has had a longstanding working relationship with Converse, releasing a laundry list of collaborative classics. He tends to dig deep into the Converse archive to put his own modern spin on long-forgotten silhouettes like the early 1900s Naut-1, ‘70s Jogger, and the recently released Bronco Boot from the 1990s.

Also, Fran Drescher has some sneaker game, too. Even back in the early 1990s, she was setting the trends, not following them. Check out these badass Nike Tailwinds she rocked on The Nanny.

It got me thinking, a lot of Tim’s fits in Marty Supreme could use some modern touches when it comes to the sneakers. So, I took it upon myself to make the following unsolicited recommendations to [checks notes] world-renowned stylist and costume designer Miyako Bellizzi, who crafted all of the iconic looks for Good Time and Uncut Gems, as well as the critically acclaimed HBO series Scenes from a Marriage, before working on Marty Supreme. Just throwing my two cents in, no pressure. A nice Nigel Jordan 1 Low, JJJJound New Balance, and some AE 1s pair really well with Marty’s effortless style. Plus, how could Marty not rock some Supreme?
