Coco Gauff defeated Ajla Tomljanovic in three tough-fought sets to advance to the second round of the U.S. Open yesterday, but outside of her serve speed, the story of the match was Gauff’s sneakers and entrance outfit. The third-ranked women’s player in the world, Gauff and her team at New Balance have always gone extra hard for Grand Slams. With the spotlight shining on Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens, you know she had to put on a show.

For the first round of the Open, Gauff pulled up to the stadium in a custom burgundy leather New Balance letterman jacket, lined with embroidered graphics and the iconic quote from her post-victory interview at the 2023 U.S. Open: “To those who thought they were putting water on my fire, you're really adding gas to it. And now I'm really burning so bright right now.”

The inspiration from Gauff’s 2023 win in Queens continued down to the shoes: a U.S. Open pair of New Balance Coco CG2 in urgent red and monarch burgundy. Added for a little extra luck, the monarch burgundy tone is the same color used in the City Lights Coco CG1 that Gauff wore during her 2023 tournament win. The burgundy theme worked for round one, but it will be a tough road for Coco to take home another trophy. Luckily, Coco’s been there before.

New Balance isn’t releasing Coco’s custom letterman jacket to the public, but you can still cop the shoes. Fair warning, we make no promises these shoes will make you hit the ball like Coco. The New Balance Coco CG2 Urgent Red/Monarch Burgundy is available now through select New Balance retailers in-store and online. Available in women’s sizing, the retail price is set at $160.
