After going scoreless in Portugal’s first World Cup match, critics and haters online clowned Cristiano Ronaldo and obviously praised rival Lionel Messi’s five goals scored so far in the tournament. But if you were one of his doubters, Ronaldo proved you wrong today. He scored two goals in today’s match against Uzbekistan and had a few more opportunities that could’ve secured the hat trick, but it's still cause for celebration. This now marks Ronaldo’s sixth World Cup, and he’s scored in each tournament, marking the first time in history a player has done so.
Nike’s Celebration for Ronaldo’s Six World Cup Appearances
To celebrate CR7 scoring in six World Cup tournaments, Nike is dropping a special edition of the Mercurial Superfly 1 RGN, the same silhouette that Ronaldo wore way back when he first made his pro debut in 2002. He wouldn’t make his first World Cup appearance until the 2006 tournament, but still, who doesn’t like a celebration of an iconic model and a legendary player?
The silhouette comes coated in a golden hue across its entire upper, with this regal shade accented by white hits on the large Swoosh around the toe, the CR7 branding near the heel, and the Swoosh logo on the tongue tag. On the insole, Nike makes it clear who the greatest of all time is, with “GOAT” spelled out, and Ronaldo’s signature present and CR7 logo placed in the center of the “O.” And while yes, it’s definitely a collector's item, the Mercuial Superfly RGN is updated with modern tech in a similar fashion to Kobe’s Protro (performance retro) ethos. Inside sits a 3/4-length Air Zoom unit built directly into the traction plate.
