In the past, when brands looked to bring back older performance styles, they’d often still use the same outdated technology and cushioning systems, leaving them lagging behind modern-day designs. However, Kobe Bryant wanted to ensure that when Nike brought back his older sneakers, they could hold up to contemporary basketball sneakers, thus spawning the Protro (performance retro) series. Nike is continuing to bring forth new Nike Kobe Protros and will actually Protro the Air Force 1 this Holiday 2025.
While Nike has upgraded the Air Force 1 countless times, updating its construction and cushioning using advanced tech, this version of the AF1 marks the first time Kobe’s innovative approach with Protro has been applied to lifestyle products. A full-length drop-in ReactX insole combines with the standard Air unit in the AF1 to give an even more plush and comfortable feeling underfoot. Outside of this, Nike has added multiple branding details, including the Kobe sheath and his jersey numbers across the upper, insole, and tooling setup. The pair will also feature hidden details and messaging across the outsole.
