Baseball, and arguably society as a whole, wouldn’t have made its progress if it wasn’t for Jackie Robinson. Back in 1947, Jackie broke the color barrier in the MLB, becoming the first African-American to enter the league with his debut for the Brooklyn Dodgers, and eventually made his way to the MLB Hall Of Fame. Outside of this monumental achievement, Jackie Robinson had major contributions to the Civil Rights Movement in the 50s and 60s, even starting a march on an airport that segregated their waiting rooms and forcing them to integrate. Nike is honoring the legacy of number 42 through this upcoming Nike Dunk Low “Jackie Robinson" edition.
As a clear homage to Robinson's playing days on the Brooklyn Dodgers, the silhouette is dressed in a two-tone cream and blue makeup. Down on the cream-colored suede toebox, an embroidered Nike Swoosh is present in an accenting blue while the mudguard, eyelets, and heel overlay borrow this blue accent. Further cream hits are found on the midfoot panel and collar area, both being broken up by a blue Nike Swoosh. A set of white laces with blue stitching nods to the baseball theme being conveyed while a special tongue tag honoring the 75th Anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier is present up top. Looking closely across the upper and on the insole you’ll find the famous quote, spoken by number 42 when breaking the color barrier, splashed sporadically, “I’m not concerned with your liking or disliking me. All I ask is that you respect me as a human being.” Rounding out the entire look is a white midsole paired with a black rubber outsole.
The Nike Dunk Low Jackie Robinson was originally slated to release on Jackie Robinson Day, April 15th, 2022 through Nike and select NSW retailers online and in-store. After a decent delay, they will now release on July 19th. Coming in men and gradeschool sizing, men's pairs will retail for $130.
