The WNBA is experiencing a massive surge in popularity, breaking attendance and viewership records season after season. Footwear companies are taking notice and finally giving the ladies signature sneakers again. Right now, there are four active WNBA stars with their own sneakers, A’ja Wilson, Sabrina Ionescu, Breanna Stewart, and Angel Reese, with Caitlin Clark expected to have her Nike sneaker launch in 2026. Before the abundance of signature basketball shoes, many of the league’s talent would get their own player-exclusive versions of inline products, like the legendary Sue Bird. After recently getting a statue unveiled outside of the Seattle Storm’s arena, Bird’s Nike Air Zoom Huarache 2K4 is finally getting a retail release.
Following a dominant run at UConn, Bird played in the WNBA for 20 years, sticking with her Seattle Storm for the entirety of her career. During her time in the league, she helped lead the Storm to four NBA championships and was selected to the WNBA All-Star team 13 times. When it comes to her footwear, Bird was a Nike athlete throughout her entire career, consistently lacing up player-exclusive sneakers. She even launched her own colorways of the Nike Kyrie 4 Low, but her Air Zoom Huarache, which she wore during her third WNBA season, was never released to the public.
The Zoom Huarache 2K4 Sue Bird rocked was done in Seattle Storm colors of white, green, and yellow to match the team’s home jersey in 2004. She would go on to wear the pair throughout the Storm’s championship run, and today it’s been immortalized on her statue. Outside of the color palette aligning with her team, the sneaker featured “Birdy” text on the collar. It’s unknown whether or not the 2026 release will contain this added branding.
The Nike Air Zoom Huarache 2K4 will have a big year in 2026, with retros of colorways like the All-Star pair (worn by Kobe Bryant) and the all-black OT renditions already confirmed. Alongside Bird’s pair in Fall 2026, Nike will also release Penny Hardaway’s 2K4 PE in Knicks colors. Bird’s 2K4 will retail for $190.
