In 1982, the Boston-based footwear label New Balance ventured across the pond. It began manufacturing select models in the United Kingdom, specifically starting its now-legendary Made in UK line in Workington. After moving to Flimby, Cumbria, UK, in 1991, New Balance’s UK factory has remained a vital part of the town, producing illustrious models like the 991, 1500, 576, and many more over the last 34 years. In a nod to the former district Flimby resided in, New Balance will introduce a new model to the Made in UK series — the New Balance Allerdale.
Although the UK government reorganized local governing bodies in 2023, abolishing the Allerdale Borough Council, the geographical region of Allerdale remains. Outside of the area being home to New Balance’s Made in UK factory, it is well-known for its stunning landscapes and historical sites, including parts of Lake District National Park, the Solway Coast, and even parts of Hadrian’s Wall, dating back to the time the Romans occupied the area.
