On October 18, 1984, Michael Jordan received a letter from the NBA stating his black and red Nike shoes violated the league’s uniform policy. The fine? $5,000. Well… let’s address the elephant in the room: the story is more kayfabe than reality. What really happened was Nike saw its next superstar athlete face off against the old guard of the NBA and sensed the perfect marketing opportunity. Truth be told, MJ wore the Nike Air Ship and was only fined $1,000. Still, the “Banned” narrative surrounding the Jordan 1 is so intertwined with the sneaker’s history that the Bred colorway is often referred to by this nickname, especially with the 2011 version of the sneaker. Fifteen years following the Banned Jordan 1 quietly rolling out at outlets, Jordan Brand is dropping the sneaker in low-top form.
What differentiates the 2011 Air Jordan 1 Retro Banned from other black and red Jordan 1 Highs, like the recent ‘85 release, is the inclusion of a red “X” on the heel and storytelling details inside the shoe. The insole features this red “X” alongside the text “On September 15, 1984, Nike created a revolutionary new basketball shoe,” the same phrase said in the iconic “Banned” commercial. The final touch is found inside the sockliner, with the date that MJ received his uniform violation.
Aside from these added details, the rest of the sneaker is faithful to the black and red Jordan 1 that we all know and love. Black tumbled leather appears on the mudguard, eyestays, and midfoot panel, while varsity red is used for the toebox, Swoosh, and heel overlays. “X” branding on the reel replaces the traditional embroidered Jordan Wings logo, but Nike Air tags still grace the top of the tongue. Finishing the sneaker is the white rubber midsole and a varsity red rubber outsole.
