A blast from the past is returning as a new adidas Powerphase in a clean-looking finish is set to kick off the new year. First released in 1987 as a gym workout shoe, the sneaker saw a resurgence a few years ago when Kanye West chose the model to be released under the Yeezy banner. Now that the sneaker has been constructed with suede, it has a typical origin story.
During the 80s, fitness became a big business as gyms opened and became accessible to everyone, and the brands that made the equipment worn to the gym had to respond. While adidas and Nike concentrated primarily on running and jogging, Reebok saw the opportunity to release an all-around gym sneaker, fittingly called the Workout, which launched in 1984. Three years later, adidas released its response, the Powerphase, and the similarities between the two silhouettes are undeniable.
In the modern era, technology has evolved, and now better-suited footwear can be found for gym use. Still, the adidas Powerphase stands the test of time as an innovative casual sneaker that seamlessly blends into any streetwear outfit. Arriving with a sophisticated alumina-colored suede upper that exudes elegance, its soft, plush material wraps the silhouette in neutrality, complemented by a matching leather heel tab for a seamless design.
Subtle branding elements elevate the aesthetic, including the debossed Powerphase moniker parallel to the Three Stripes on the midfoot. The modified lace stay incorporates adidas branding, while the insole's linear gold foil logo adds a refined touch. Perforations on the toebox and sides enhance breathability while adding a touch of retro-inspired detailing.
Completing the look is an off-white EVA cushioned midsole that ensures all-day comfort without compromising style. The rubber outsole enhances durability and traction, providing excellent grip.
The adidas Powerphase Alumina is set to release on January 9, 2025, via adidas and select retailers online and in-store. Coming in men's sizing, retail is $110.
