New York City has long been the heart of sneaker culture, with more shoe stores per square mile than anywhere else in the country. With that much competition around, it can be hard to establish a footprint, and for retailers that have cemented themselves as staples in the city, the work is still never done to stay relevant. At Brooklyn’s WOODstack, the shop’s latest collab is a tribute to the work it takes to keep the lights on and the gate rolled up.
The WOODstack x adidas Adistar Control 5 Blood, Sweat, and Tears is a mix of red, silver, and blue strategically placed to represent the sacrifice it takes to keep a small business thriving. Burgundy mesh covers the base of the upper to represent the “blood of those who continue to sacrifice the time, resources, and energy needed to succeed,” while the silver support panels evoke the gates in front of every WOODstack retail location. The blue overlays stacked on top of the silver structure signify the sweat and tears that come with hard work, but, as WOODstack noted in the Instagram post announcing the shoe, “joyful, meaningful [tears] that come with success.”
The Three Stripes has brought a strong focus to the Adistar Control 5 to round out the year, adding collabs with Sporty & Rich and Milwaukee sneaker retailer Clicks in addition to the upcoming WOODstack pair. Alongside the Control 5, the adidas Adistar line has taken up the mantle as the brand’s most popular line, with Pharrell’s Jellyfish and the knockdown XLG 2.0 Squid both making waves this winter.
