The Odyssey is here. Christopher Nolan’s interpretation of Homer’s classic tale has officially hit theaters worldwide, and there is, of course, insane demand for the IMAX 70MM showings. Opening weekend was sold out in virtually all of the roughly 20 theaters in the US that are showing the film in its intended format, so you’ll have to wait until August in most cases to see it in the epic 1.43:1 aspect ratio. But even if you’re seeing it in standard 70mm, 35mm, or like most people, digitally projected, you’ll want a commemorative popcorn bucket to show that you too went on an odyssey to see the film.

Most theaters across the world will have a special Trojan Horse-inspired popcorn bucket for sale. The actual capacity for holding kernels is pretty slim; it might not even qualify as a “small” size, but it’s more about commemorating Chris Nolan’s epic. In the film, Nolan reinterprets the myth of the Trojan Horse, which was used to sneak into the city of Troy and attack it from within, by constructing it out of bronze. However, the popcorn bucket sticks to the traditional myth and features a wooden look, though it’s actually made of plastic. Don’t want wood chips in your popcorn now, do you?

Now, technically, the IMAX Film Camera Popcorn Bucket is not featured in the film, but it is what Christopher Nolan and director of photography Hoyte van Hoytema used throughout the whole 2-hour and 53-minute run time. It’s the first motion picture ever entirely shot on IMAX film, a feat accomplished by creating a “blimp” that dampens the noise of the camera. Typically, IMAX is reserved for large sweeping landscape shots or overhead action moments, but in Nolan’s mind, the epic scale of The Odyssey required the use of IMAX throughout. As for the actual use for snacking on popcorn, it’ll hold more than the Trojan Horse, but again, this is more of a collector's piece.

Where to Buy The Odyssey Popcorn Bucks

Both the Trojan Horse and IMAX Film Camera popcorn buckets are available for purchase through AMC, with the Trojan Horse retailing for $70 and the IMAX camera for $50. However, the IMAX camera has been sold out for weeks via IMAX’s store, so it’s being offered via pre-order. Shipping for the IMAX camera popcorn bucket is expected in November.
