In anticipation of the upcoming Street Fighter live-action movie, Topps is going back to the archives and releasing a Street Fighter trading card product for the first time since 1993. Instead of a regular retail release, Topps revealed the set the day before preorders went live on October 9th. The set has collectors buzzing because of the sudden reveal and the lack of a detailed checklist as to what cards will actually be in the set. Despite the lack of heavy promotion unlike other Topps pop culture releases, this might end up being a cult classic set, especially if the movie is a box office smash. And based on the trailer, it could go either way.
Who is Featured in Topps x Street Fighter?
Topps is selling the set in individual packs instead of a box format. So far, they have revealed the pack art and cards of Noah Centineo as Ken Masters, Andrew Koji as Ryu, Callina Liang as Chun-Li, Cody Rhodes as Guile, and Roman Reigns as Akuma. While they haven’t been shown in card form yet, the rest of the set features a wildly colorful cast that includes 50 Cent as Balrog, Mel Jarnson as Cammy, Jason Momoa as Blanka, Orville Peck as Vega, David Dastmalchian as M. Bison, Eric André as Don Sauvage, and many more.
Each pack will contain 4 base cards and one parallel. The levels of parallels include a non-numbered rainbow foil card, other color foil cards that range from 50 to 5 made, and the one-of-one Foilfractor.
Is the New Movie a Sequel to the 1994 Cult Classic Starring Jean-Claude Van Damme?
No, and it’s not a follow-up to the other failed attempts to make an ongoing live-action Street Fighter movie franchise. This new take is leaning hard into nostalgia with nods to the iconic 1991 game Street Fighter II and its many updates. The iconography and character designs are ripped straight out of the games, unlike some films that have tried to stray away from the inherent absurdity of the series by grounding them with some sense of realism. No word on whether Van Damme will make a cameo or if there will be a remix to the very 1990s jam “Straight To My Feet” by MC Hammer featuring Deion Sanders that was on the soundtrack.
Did Topps Make a Street Fighter Trading Card Set in 1993?
Yes, and not surprisingly, there is a sudden uptick in interest in the set thanks to the upcoming movie. While single cards are still very affordable because they were mass-produced during the junk wax era of trading cards, graded versions have started to pop up, and Gem Mint examples are now selling for hundreds of dollars.
