Nike’s foray into the metaverse continues as the brand’s social media accounts posted a video teasing an upcoming collaboration with Fortnite.
In the teaser video, Nike, Fortnite, and Air Max logos are featured. Sole Retriever can confirm a co-branded clothing collection will launch, and the video's inclusion of the .SWOOSH logo suggests there will also be a digital element. The post's caption reads, "On 6.20 the ultimate Sneakerhunt begins."
Following a teaser, Nike and Fortnite announced what this collaboration would entail. In-game, players can play on the Airphoria Island and explore the "meticulously crafted Air Max-themed universe" according to Nike's press release. There are five iconic Air Max "Grails" across the island, the Air Max 1 OG, Air Max 97, Air Max TW, Air Max Scorpion, and Air Max Pulse. Each model is reimagined in-game, such as the Air Max 97 which gets turned into a literal bullet train.
"As digital and physical worlds become more seamless across the products and experiences we offer, we’re always seeking authentic ways to deepen our connection with fans, expand access points to Nike across our digital ecosystem and inspire a love of sport and play. What’s more, Nike is one of the first brands to use Epic Games’ Unreal Editor for Fortnite to build Airphoria, paving the way for a continued partnership that will further unlock the future of gaming," said Ron Faris, VP/GM of Nike Virtual Studios in a press release.
Two in-game skins are also up for purchase — Airie and Maxxed Out Max. These two characters also act as the main characters in the islands story. Alongside these characters, other items offered in Fortnite's Shop include the That Ice Pickaxe, Maxx Axe Pickaze, Maxx Drop Glider, and the Keep 'Em Crispy Emote. You can also earn the Air Max 1 '86 Back Bling if you play on the island for at least 10 mins. .SWOOSH members can also earn an "achievement" if they link their Epic Games account and Nike account before June 27 at 8 PM ET.
