Nearly four decades later, we’re still no closer to fully replicating the future Robert Zemeckis envisioned for us in the Back to the Future franchise. We may not actually have hoverboards, auto-adjusting clothes, or 3D projected films, but we did get incredibly close to the self-lacing Nike Mag in 2015. The Mag became such a cultural touchpoint that the colorway itself has made its way into the zeitgeist. Soon, the Nike Air Tech Challenge 2, famously worn by Andrei Agassi, will receive a colorway drawing from another of Tinker Hatfield’s famous designs.

Where We’re Going, We Don’t Need Roads

The long-awaited Back to the Future II-themed colorway of the Nike Air Tech Challenge 2 is hoverboarding its way to shelves. The colorway draws from the iconic self-lacing Nike Mag that Marty McFly wears when he jumps ahead to the year 2015, but he’d surely have a pair of these if he stopped traveling in time enough to make it to the original 1989 release of the Air Tech Challenge 2. The silhouette adopts a tumbled grey leather upper echoing the Air Mag’s coloration. A stark white Swoosh also made of tumbled leather continues the theme while adding extra dimension to the soft grey silhouette.

The cutouts on the side panels are filled with a shade of blue that gives the glowing look of the Mag’s outsole. That same shade of blue splatters onto the speckled midsole and Nike Air branding on the heel. In another subtle nod to the classic 1989 sequel, the Nike Air branding on the tongue and insole features an orange-to-yellow gradient much like the film trio’s quintessential logo. Completing the look is an icy translucent outsole.
