If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, the team in Beaverton should be feeling pretty flattered right about now. With low-profile retro runners replacing significant portions of the chunky dad shoe dominance across the sneaker industry, New Balance is continuing its slimmed-down push with a new silhouette that looks awfully similar to a recent retro from the Nike camp.

The New Balance Gator Run, which is an updated version of the Gator Turf that was originally released in 1982, is New Balance’s answer to the Nike Astrograbber, with a similar shape and nubbed outsole. The NB version features more paneling around the toe and side panels, plus, as the name suggests, shiny gator skin on the upper for a bit of differentiation. Of course, the sneaker industry is full of similarities, and the familiar shape doesn’t take much away from this easy-to-wear, dressed-up runner.

Debuting in two colorways: shadow red and black, the uppers are done entirely in shiny faux gator print, with a wide toe panel stretching out to the sides, a diagonal layer at the bottom of the side panels, and soft leather on the tongue. Underfoot, a series of pointy nubs covers the outsole for a new look from the NB camp.

Sometimes the most memorable details come from revisiting the past and looking at solutions through a new lens.”
