Mixing up the typical construction of the New Balance 550, the Boston-based footwear brand brings grey and lavender hits to the silhouette.
After being revived courtesy of Aime Leon Dore and its founder Teddy Santis, the New Balance 550 has become a smash hit in the footwear industry as it taps into the current trend of 80s retro low-top basketball silhouettes spawned by the Nike Dunk Low craze. As a direct competitor to The Swoosh’s offering, it’s a surprise we have yet to see the model delve into the realm of creativity such as switching up the material makeup, however, the latest offering from NB does just that. Taking on a “Grey Lavender” color scheme, the New Balance 550 is finally taking on new materials.
While we have seen the likes of JFG and the Conversations Amongst Us collection add canvas to the archival silhouette, this is one of the first inline offerings from NB that adds the material to the silhouette. Taking on a greyscale color scheme across most of the suede and canvas upper, accenting hits of lavender appear on the piping of the “550” branded overlay. Darker grey shades appear on the mudguard, quarter panel, and heel while lighter, almost white-like shades appear on the toebox, tongue tag, and collar. Typical branding details remain unchanged with the basketball graphic landing on the tongue and the infamous “N” logo sitting in the center of the quarter panel. Underfoot, a white NB 550 midsole gets paired with a white rubber outsole featuring lavender hits on the toe and heel.
