Lionel Messi’s Argentina National Team career came to a close when he scored a goal and assisted on two others against Benin at the Estadio Monumental on October 6. The moment was emotional for everybody in attendance and for the country as Messi leaves the team with a number of trophies including an Olympic gold medal, two Copa Américas, and the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the last of which cemented his place in the minds of many fans and analysts as the greatest of all time.
To celebrate the occasion, Topps released a special Topps Now 2-card pack featuring Messi in his Argentina kit for the last time. Along with the base card, the second card can be a variety of different inserts, parallels, and possibly autographed variations. The pack was available for several days, which gave fans plenty of opportunity to buy them for $19.99 each.
Despite the higher-than-usual price point for Topps Now cards (they typically sell for $8.99 to $11.99 a card), that did not deter fans from breaking records. With the order window now closed, Messi’s Argentina Farewell card pack is now the highest-selling Topps Now product of all time, surpassing by a wide margin the previous record that was set by the legendary Team USA trio of Steph Curry, LeBron James, and Kevin Durant during the 2024 Olympics, and the card that surpassed them, the Shohei Ohtani card that recalls the day he became the first player to record 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases while going 6-for-6 with 3 home runs and 2 stolen bases.
With 664,325 copies of the Messi Farewell card, this has unlocked every level in the Topps Now structure, including the never-before-used one-of-one White OpalFractor. Here is how the cards will break down according to Topps.
