The future of footwear is bright. Jordan Brand has been relying on its retro program for years now, with most takes on the classics coming in colorway shifts instead of new silhouettes. The Jumpman isn’t satisfied with the past, though, and for its latest future-forward initiative, the brand tapped designers from around the globe, paired them with mentors from the Jordan family, and set them loose on the Air Jordan 1 to remake an icon.
Jordan’s New Design Champion of the World
Now, the Jordan Design Studio competition has a champion, with Nike crowning Beijing’s Syn Zhuang at the finale event in Shanghai. Zhuang’s version of the Jordan 1 took a slouched boot approach, adding a tumbling coat of white leather to the shoe until the silhouette became nearly unrecognizable. Featuring a perforated Swoosh with an upside-down replica on the high ankle, the shoe leans the front of the ankle toward the toe.
“Honestly, I never expected this result,” Zhuang said at the reception in Shanghai. “From winning in Beijing to where we are now, getting this result, it’s just incredible. I’m so excited that I can barely speak right now.”
