Balenciaga often leads fashion trends or adapts popular styles within the industry. The brand's take on sock sneakers has sparked debate; while not a novel concept, Balenciaga's unique interpretation of this design generates controversy. At the heart of this controversy is Ye’s new Yeezy Pod design.
Leading the creative direction at Balenciaga is Georgian designer Demna, known for his groundbreaking work with Vetements. Under his guidance, Vetements introduced a sock sneaker in 2019, though Ye was spotted wearing the Yeezy Scuba in the same year. This sock-like design was used as a prototype for the internals of silhouettes like the Yeezy QNTM. The relationship between Demna and Ye saw the two producing similar designs over the years for their respective labels. However, the two would join hands with the introduction of Yeezy Gap Engineered By Balenciaga.
As told by a former associate of Ye and Demna, miketheruler, Ye allegedly stole the design of his Yeezy Pod from Balenciaga with claims that Ye bought samples of the Balenciaga footwear and hired the ex-head footwear designer. This venture isn’t the first time Ye has dabbled in sock sneakers. Not only was he spotted wearing the aforementioned Yeezy Scuba, but he produced sock shoe samples similar to Balenciaga’s in 2019 with adidas and in 2021 with Gap.
The Balenciaga Sock Sneaker is a simple yet elegant design, embodying the essence of minimalism and luxury. The shoe features a sleek sock-like upper seamlessly attached to a refined rubber sole, providing comfort and a statement in fashion. Notably, a unique iteration showcased at Balenciaga's fashion show introduced a stiletto heel version, blending traditional elements of high fashion with the casual, modern appeal of sock sneakers.
