Breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball back in 1947, Jackie Robinson's legacy continues to live on well past his death in 1972. In honor of Robinson's historic career, MLB players wear his iconic number 42 on April 15th each year, known as Jackie Robinson Day. On this MLB holiday, players often rock special cleats and gear to commemorate Robinson’s legacy. This year, Jordan Brand created a special pair of cleats for their athletes - the Air Jordan 5 Retro MCS "Jackie Robinson Day" PE.
Unlike last year’s Nike Dunk Low and this year's AF1, which celebrated the legacy of number 42, Jordan Brand created a baseball cleat version of the classic Air Jordan 5 silhouette. Across the sneaker, you’ll find a ripstop nylon upper in a light blue shade with cream laces. Atop the tongue, you find a hit of black and blue with the suede portion forgoing the usual 3M reflective detail. Nodding directly to Robinson, the mid-foot's side cage features number 42, paying homage to the trailblazing athlete. A tag on the inside of the tongue splits a quote from Jackie Robinson, "Respect me as a human being," between the left and right sneakers. Mimicking Robinson’s rookie card, the heel tab hosts a Jumpman-branded PSA-like grading tag. Underfoot, the black midsole gets retooled to be fit for the playing field, while a spiked rubber outsole comes in translucent gum.
The Air Jordan 5 Retro MCS Jackie Robinson Day PE will remain exclusive to Jordan Brand athletes and not be seeing a retail release. Although this tribute to Robinson will stay on the baseball diamond, check below for detailed images of the exclusive pair.
