Air Jordan 2 History: Complete Guide to Every Release & Moment
Updated on •Published
Why the Air Jordan 2 Failed to Follow the Success of the AJ1
Sequels are hard. No matter the subject, it's usually hard to top the first. This goes for movies, TV, sports, relationships, and even sneakers. Regarding sneakers, the sequel is usually a flop compared to its predecessor. Very rarely does a follow-up sneaker do better than the first. Sure, this has happened from time to time. However, the sequel falls by the wayside nine times out of ten. One unfortunate case in point is the Air Jordan 2.
The Air Jordan 2 Origins: Design, Release Year, and Initial Reception
Initially released in 1986 and designed by Peter Moore and Bruce Kilgore, the Air Jordan 2 is highly touted as one of the all-time most overlooked signature sneakers, let alone in the Air Jordan line. Sure, the AJ 2 has a cult following of sneakerheads and fans that covet the model, but that's a niche group. Overall, the sneaker never got off the ground as Nike and Jordan Brand had hoped in its almost 40-year existence. With this anniversary lingering, we will have to wait and see if Jordan Brand has any surprise AJ 2 releases in the pipeline. For now, we must enjoy the pairs that have come and gone.
Why the Air Jordan 2 Was Ahead of Its Time
The Air Jordan 2 is the least produced model in the series' history. Only two high-tops and two lows dropped during its initial run, both in Chicago Bulls-themed colorways of white/black and white/red. Made in Italy, the pair retailed for $100, $35 more than the Air Jordan 1. The price increase was due to production costs, which included using genuine Italian leather throughout the design. MJ would even lace up the AJ 2 for the 1987 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, for which he won. After the lackluster design and sales of the Air Jordan 2, Nike almost lost Michael Jordan to rival adidas, as he threatened to walk unless the Swoosh made a drastic change, something they did when the legendary designer, Tinker Hatfield, created the iconic Air Jordan 3 and brought forth the Jumpman logo we know and love.

How the Air Jordan 2 Nearly Ended Michael Jordan’s Nike Legacy
After its 86-87 run, the Air Jordan 2 remained dormant until Michael Jordan retired from the NBA for the first time in October 1993 to pursue a career in professional baseball. To celebrate MJ's basketball career, Nike retroed the first three Air Jordan models from 1994-95. This run ended abruptly when it was announced His Airness would return to the NBA on March 19, 1995. As a result, the Air Jordan 2 dropped in the Chicago colorway in both high and low, complete with special packaging explicitly made for the 94-95 Air Jordan Retro run.

Lost Molds and Missed Opportunities: The AJ 2’s Forgotten Years (1995–2002)
Between 1995 and 2002, the original molds for the Air Jordan 2 were lost or destroyed. This made it almost impossible for Jordan Brand to properly retro the model. Instead, we got an Air Jordan Nu Retro 2, a new, modern version with a shrouded upper that was poorly received, lasting only three colorways, in 2003. Hindsight is always 20/20, though, as we got a proper Air Jordan 2 Retro run from 2004 to 05.
2004–2005 Retro Run: AJ 2 Returns with Chicago and Carmelo Anthony Colorways
During the Air Jordan 2 Retro run from 2004-05, the original Chicago colorway kicked things off, followed by two new colorways, Black Chrome, and a pair resembling a player exclusive for Carmelo Anthony. Retailing for $110, all three pairs came in the GR Jordan packaging, which was the Jordan face box at the time, and a retro card made specifically for the AJ 2. Following this, two Air Jordan 2 Retro Lows were released, one paying homage to the original white/red pair and the Chicago Bulls. At the same time, the other came in an all-new white, university blue, and midnight navy makeup, a nod to MJ's alma mater, the University of North Carolina. Both pairs came in the same packaging as their high-top counterparts but retailed for $20 less, at $90.

The First Air Jordan 2 Women’s Release and Doernbecher Collaboration
In 2005, two more Air Jordan 2 Retro Lows were released, one for men and the other for women. Both were new colorways and came in the silver 20th Anniversary Jordan box, made to commemorate the 20th birthday of the Air Jordan 1, celebrated throughout the year. This also marked the first women's exclusive release for the AJ 2. While this ended the run of the Air Jordan 2 Retro, we didn't have to wait long for it to make a return. As a part of Nike's Doernbecher Freestyle Collection, created in partnership with the OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital, the Air Jordan 2 Retro became the first Air Jordan to be included in this series. Dropping in 2007, the pair was designed by Sheridan Brenton, a hospital patient. Like most Nike x Doernbecher releases, this AJ 2 was exclusively sold at select Nike retail locations and online at nike.com.

Rare Air: Eminem x Air Jordan 2 and Countdown Pack Highlights (2008)
After a one-year hiatus, the Air Jordan 2 Retro would make its presence felt via two releases. One pair was a part of the Air Jordan Collezione aka Countdown Pack (CDP) series, which consisted of eleven two-shoe packs featuring Air Jordan models that added up to the number 23, for example, 2+21=23. This saw the return of the original white/red pair in high-top form for the first time, alongside a black/red colorway of the Air Jordan 21. The other pair released in 2008 was the coveted Eminem x Air Jordan 2 Retro. Em's AJ 2 was made to coincide with the release of his book, The Way I Am. 313 pairs were made, an homage to the area code for the city of Detroit, which Slim Shady calls home.

Silver Anniversary and Bin23 Collection: AJ 2 Debuts Jordan Brand’s Premium Series
2010 marked the 25th Anniversary of the Air Jordan, aka the Silver Anniversary. Various Air Jordan silhouettes got white and silver makeovers to mark the occasion, including the Air Jordan 2. The Air Jordan 2 Retro Silver Anniversary edition kicked off the next series of AJ 2s that spanned nine releases. This included a GS exclusive made in collaboration with Vashtie Kola, making her the first female to collaborate with Jordan Brand on a signature Air Jordan sneaker. In addition to those two pairs, the Air Jordan 2 was the first pair released in the Premio Bin23 Collection. This collection of Air Jordans featured premium materials, wooden shoe trees, and dust bags, and it was limited, with each pair individually numbered.
2014–2016 AJ 2 Revival: From Nightshade to Just Don’s Luxury Drops
Following this run, the Air Jordan 2 would take a four-year break before returning in 2014 for another solid run. Notable releases included Concord, Nightshade, and the original White Varsity Red. One year later, in 2015, Chicago-based Don C brought elegance to the Air Jordan 2 with his Bright Blue edition. Everything from the quality, design, materials, and packaging was executed to the highest standards, commanding a $300 price tag. One year later, Just Don would kick things up with his Beach-colored follow-up, retailing for $650. This pair is the most expensive Air Jordan 2 release to date. Don C would round out his Air Jordan 2 series with a third Arctic Orange colorway, the most limited of the set, one year later.
The Deconstructed Air Jordan 2 and the Converse Alumni Pack Collab
Before Just Don's third AJ 2 drop, the Air Jordan 2 Retro had another solid run spanning over six pairs in 2016, including Alternate, Wing It, and Quai54 iterations. In 2017, Jordan Brand deconstructed the AJ 2 for the first time. This design tied in with the trend then and spanned three limited edition colorways. Following this, the Air Jordan 2 would join another two-shoe pack in a cross-branded partnership with Converse. The Alumni Pack featured the Converse Fast Break Mid alongside the Air Jordan 2 Retro, both done in OG-style colorways, paying homage to MJ's time at Chapel Hill.

Melo, Rivalry, and Off-White: Air Jordan 2 Gets Creative (2018–2021)
For 2018, the Air Jordan 2 Retro was one and done with the re-release of the Melo edition, initially released in 2004. In 2020, Jordan Brand treated the ladies to a women's exclusive Rivalry edition of the Air Jordan 2, sporting a What The-like design inspired by the teams MJ took down en route to his six NBA championships. In November 2021, the true resurrection of the Air Jordan 2 began. This run kicked off with two low-tops made in collaboration with the late Virgil Abloh for his Off-White imprint. The pairs drew inspiration from the original AJ 2 Low, which was 3D scanned and implemented into both pairs, creating a unique cracked-like midsole design. Abloh was a big fan of the AJ 2, so there was no one more deserving to bring the silhouette back into the mainstream.

The Air Jordan 2 Revival Era: Top Collaborations and Colorways (2022–2024)
Throughout 2022-2024, the Air Jordan 2 was a dominant force in Jordan Brand's arsenal, seeing multiple colorways released each quarter in high and low-top form. Collaborations from Union LA, A Ma Maniere, Nina Chanel Abney, Maison Chateau Rouge, J. Balvin, Shelflife, Two 18, and Titan helped further the hype train Abloh ushered in. Various GRs, including the original Chicago pair, were released back in the most accurate version to the 1986 pair to date. Another notable pair is the AJ 2 Low UNC, which was inspired by an original PE edition MJ wore during an alumni game. Is the Air Jordan 2 Over? Jordan Brand Shelves the Model Again in 2024
Following a handful of releases in 2024, Jordan Brand put the Air Jordan 2 back in the vault for the foreseeable future, ending its recent run. While some say that JB OD'd on the AJ 2 during its last run, others remember it as a successful run that had more people look at the silhouette for what it is, rather than as an often overlooked and forgotten sneaker. If you're a fan of the Air Jordan 2, that was the golden era, giving you plenty of options and various pairs to stock up on, especially since many pairs went on deep discount.

Air Jordan 2 Retro QF Chicago (2010)
The original Chicago colorway of the Air Jordan 2 made a triumphant comeback on May 22, 2010. This time, it was labeled the Air Jordan 2 Retro QF, in what has been dubbed a manufacturer mistake as "QF" was a part of sample labeling but somehow made it onto the packaging. This pair also features slight differences from its prior release in 2004. While it looks the same from the side, the heel tab on this iteration is all red instead of black/red on previous pairs. As a result, the Nike branding comes inverted as well. The pair was a general release, retailing for $135, $25 more than its 04 predecessor.

Air Jordan 2 Retro QF University Blue
The second Air Jordan 2 Retro QF release of 2010 came with the University Blue edition. This pair sports a university blue-based nubuck upper with black accents. Air Jordan 2 Retro QF Candy Pack Red
This Air Jordan 2 Retro QF colorway is part of the Candy Pack. Coming in a Chicago-friendly varsity red, white, and black, red covers most of the upper in various materials. Black accents also make their way into the laces and midsole, helping to break up the red-based design. Jordan branding is on the back heel, insoles, and bottom of the outsole, while the classic Wings logo is prominently featured on the tongue. A solid, all-white rubber outsole completes the look. They were released in November 2010 for $135 in men's sizing.

Air Jordan 2 Retro Dark Concord
The Air Jordan 2 Retro Dark Concord's design draws inspiration from multiple other Air Jordan models. The midfoot panel features an elephant print from the Air Jordan 3, while Dark Concord, often associated with the Air Jordan 11, accents the white upper. The Final nod to other Jordans comes from the speckle paint finish on the midsole, a feature common on the Air Jordan 4.

Air Jordan 2 Retro Nightshade
In 2014, the Air Jordan 2 Retro had a big comeback. One of the pairs released was an all-new Nightshade edition. This pair sports a nightshade-based upper with safari print detailing. Volt Ice and black accents accompany the plaint splatter design on the laces and midsole. A solid white rubber outsole finishes the pair off. The Air Jordan 2 Retro Nightshade was released on May 17, 2014. In men's sizing, retail was $150.

Air Jordan 2 Retro Iron Purple

Dubbed the Radio Raheem edition, this pair pays homage to the infamous character in the Spike Lee film Do The Right Thing. Predominantly in black, the upper comprises leather and suede. Multi-colored plastic round eyelets highlight Photo Blue accents and a white midsole/outsole. The Air Jordan 2 Retro Radio Raheem was released on January 9, 2016. They retailed for $190 in men's sizing.

Air Jordan 2 Retro Just Don Beach
Don C's Just Don brand crafted one of the most premium Air Jordan 2s ever. Air Jordan 2 Retro Wing It
The Air Jordan 2 Retro Wing It draws inspiration from one of the earliest Air Jordan ad campaigns for the model from the mid-80s. The graphic is black and white, with MJ wearing the Air Jordan 2 prominently. As a result, the inspiration for this black and white pic was applied to the upper of this pair. It features a white-based leather upper with black accents and subtle hits of cool grey. Instead of Nike on the back heels, the phrase Wing It is plastered across, tying the theme altogether. The Air Jordan 2 Retro Wing It was released on March 5, 2016, retailing for $190 in men's sizing.

Air Jordan 2 Retro Low Gym Red
The Air Jordan 2 Retro Low returned in 2016. New and old colorways have been released, including this Gym Red edition. Branding comes via the Wings logo on the tongue, Jumpman on the insoles, and Nike on the bottom of the outsole.

Air Jordan 2 Retro Low Chicago (2016)
The original Air Jordan 2 Retro Low Chicago made a triumphant comeback in 2016. This marked the first time this pair had been re-released since 1995. Coming in the classic Chicago Bulls colorblocking, the white-based upper is accented by red and black accents, classic Wings logo branding on the tongue, Nike Air branding on the insoles, and a black midsole. A white and red solid rubber outsole finishes off the design.

Air Jordan 2 Retro Low University Blue (2016)
Jordan Brand dropped an all-new Air Jordan 2 Retro Low University Blue edition in 2016. Similar to the pair from 2004, this one comes in the same white, university blue, and midnight navy color scheme but flips the color placement in certain areas. The piping is now solid university blue rather than two-tone. The outsole is also university blue and midnight navy, unlike all-white, like the pair from 04. The Air Jordan 2 Retro Low University Blue was released in men's sizing on June 11, 2016, retailing for $160.

Air Jordan 2 Retro Quai54
The Air Jordan 2 Retro Quai54 edition was made to commemorate the 2016 Parisian street basketball tournament. The pair comes in a light bone, white, and metallic gold colorway. Light Bone covers the majority of the upper, accented by metallic gold. Custom branding comes in the form of P75 on the back heel and Q54 on the tongue of the left shoe, with the classic Wings logo on the tongue and Nike on the back heel of the right. Both feature Quai54-branded insoles. A translucent gum rubber outsole gives way to one more hit of Quai54 branding underneath. The Quai54 x Air Jordan 2 Retro was released on July 23, 2016, retailing for $190 in men's sizing.

Air Jordan 2 Retro Decon Bordeaux
Luxury sneakers inspired the Air Jordan 2 Decon silhouette, and this Bordeaux colorway perfectly encapsulates the feeling luxury shoes give. A premium Bordeaux suede is applied to the upper, with tonal hits of red found on the sole unit, laces, sockliner, and branding on the heel.

Air Jordan 2 Retro Decon Mint Foam
Minty hues take over this Air Jordan 2 Retro Decon. The silhouette features a deconstructed upper and premium suede, with the titular mint foam hue coating the entire model. Down below sits a tonal mint foam midsole.

Air Jordan 2 Retro Decon Mineral Gold
Joining the Air Jordan 2 Decon series is this Mineral Gold variant. Like other pairs, the upper is crafted from premium suede, a nod to the original Air Jordan 2's Made in Italy construction. Mineral gold suede covers each and every panel, while a tonal gold midsole and outsole finish the look.

Air Jordan 2 Retro Just Don Arctic Orange
Don C, a close associate of Virgil Abloh and others in the fashion world, crafted a luxurious take on the Air Jordan 2, coating the sneaker in an arctic orange shade. The upper features a quilted leather finish alongside tonal suede panels, while the artic orange hue extends to the heel tab and sole unit. The pair retailed for $500 due to the premium materials.

Air Jordan 2 Retro Decon Thunder Blue
The Air Jordan 2 Retro Decon comes in a clean Thunder Blue color palette. Premium suede wraps around the entire upper, and the internals are deconstructed for a looser fit and a nod to luxury footwear. The white rubber midsole finishes the design.

Air Jordan 2 Retro Decon Black
One of many Air Jordan 2 Decons, this black colorway coats the deconstructed and simplified sneaker in tonal black suede across its design. Inspiration for this pair comes from the original Air Jordan 2's Made in Italy construction, more specifically, luxury sneakers and their high-quality craftsmanship.
