Topps is getting ready to release their most ambitious and expensive Marvel card set to date with Topps Vault Marvel on September 23. Based on the Marvel Studios side of the license, the ultra-premium set will feature hobby boxes themed in the vein of a vault with only two cards inside. With an MSRP of $679.99, the gamble is huge, but the potential of what’s inside could make it worth taking the plunge.
What is included in Topps Vault Marvel?
Each box will consist of two cards - one relic card and one autograph or sketch card - plus the oversized box topper. The cards inside Topps Vault Marvel will be of the ultra-premium variety, with autographs from actors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, embedded pieces of props from key moments in the movie, and original one-of-a-kind sketch cards from legendary comic book artists. While the previous Topps Marvel Studios set includes autographs of supporting characters and sketch cards from more niche names, the Vault Marvel checklist is composed mostly of A-listers, actors with prominent roles in the films, and comic book and sketch artists with storied resumes. One of the big cards to chase from the set will be a booklet autograph card that features a piece of Captain America’s shield and an on-card Chris Evans signature.
The Topps Chrome brand will also be a part of Vault Marvel with the Immortal Autographs set. Using the familiar and shiny Topps Chrome finish and the popular Superfractor effect for the one-of-one variants, it’s an easy way to enhance what is already a very loaded checklist of stars that includes Anthony Hopkins (Odin), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), Hugh Jackman (Wolverine), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), and a whole lot more.
As a 90s comic book fan, the set that intrigues me most is the Golden Sketches cards, which include original artwork from legends like Frank Miller, Ron Lim, Whilce Portacio, and Art Adams. Secondary market prices for original art from comic books during the 80s and 90s can go for tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the characters and the action being featured on the page. The $679.99 price point and the random nature of trading cards do not sound like a wise proposition, but the allure of owning a piece by Frank Miller might be worth the risk to a select few.
When will Topps Vault Marvel Release?
Topps Vault Marvel will drop on September 23. There was an EQL pre-order that was available previously, but Topps and Fanatics have been known to release additional product on launch day for fans who missed out on the initial run.
