Though there were some concerns going into the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the matches have been electric so far. Yeah, there were a few snooze fests, but some amazing storylines and moments occurred in the tournament already, and we’re still in the group stage. Messi just broke the record for most career goals in the World Cup, Cabo Verde shocked the world by drawing against powerhouse Spain, and the US men’s team came out of the gate with back-to-back wins. But pay attention to any game, good or bad, and you’ll notice one thing: pink cleats.

World Cup Pink Cleat Heat

It doesn’t matter which team you look at or which match you tune into; a majority of players on the pitch are wearing pink, and there are a number of reasons behind this. The major one, that is a bit of a buzzkill to hear, is that major labels like Puma, adidas, and Nike independently created a number of pink cleats ahead of the World Cup because the shade stands out so well against the green grass on the pitch. It’s not as interesting as a concerted effort to make players stand out, but it’s the one with the most truth.

Some have also pointed to the fact that, historically, the best players on the pitch would lace up bright and vibrant boots. These would often be pink, and it was a clear indicator of who was the most dangerous. The same rule applies to basketball, where someone like Kobe Bryant would take the floor in Kobe 6 Grinches, a shoe that really stands out.

Other Cleats Worn at the 2026 World Cup

Though the pink cleats in the World Cup have drawn a ton of attention, Messi’s Argentinian-themed cleats are now the talk of the internet. He scored two goals against Austria, bringing him to a total of 18 career goals in the World Cup. It didn’t take long for adidas to celebrate the occasion.
