Asics' mesh runners have been all the rage in the fashion and streetwear scenes, with the comfortable retro-like models being some of the more affordable sneakers on the market than Nike and New Balance. While this is true for most releases, Asics teamed up with renowned Japanese jeweler Tasaki to celebrate the jeweler's 70th Anniversary. This saw a significant price increase for the model, with prices ranging from $1,100 to an astonishing $29,000 based on the variant.
Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, the Tasaki x Asics GT-2160 retains its classic silhouette, featuring a mesh base complemented by leather overlays. The sneaker adopts a white and creamy tan palette, accented with subtle iridescent touches across its design. While the sneaker itself refrains from showcasing Tasaki branding, Asics' signature logos gracefully adorn the tongue and lateral heel. The insole, however, nods to the collaboration with illustrations of pearls, seamlessly linking to the collection's overarching theme.
With the sneaker as its canvas, Tasaki meticulously applies Akoya pearls and 18K-plates silver across various parts of the sneakers. Five unique versions are available in the range, including a model lavishly adorned with 1,000 Akoya pearls across the lateral side and heel. Other variants feature a more restrained application of pearls, such as a simple pearl necklace embellishing the lateral side and tongue or one version that only adds three to the vamp.
The Tasaki x Asics GT-2160 Pearl Collection will release on April 26, 2024, through Tasaki's FLOATING SHELL exhibit in Japan. Available in men’s sizing, the retail prices span from $1,100 to $29,000 depending on the variant.
