Steven Smith, “The Godfather of Dad Shoes,” as he goes by, is responsible for dozens of classic sneakers across the entire footwear industry. He got his start at New Balance in the ‘80s, designing iconic models like the 574 and 1500, before eventually working around the rest of the industry. He would bounce around from Reebok (Instapump Fury) to Nike (Air Spiridon Caged 2 and Shox Monster), ending up as the right-hand man to Ye’s adidas Yeezy empire in 2017. With adidas Yeezy long gone, Steven is now head of creative innovation at Crocs. In his latest Instagram story post, Smith just teased us with what is potentially his first design for the Colorado clog makers.
The organic and bulbous foam-based slip-on looks like something right out of the Yeezy playbook. Two pod-like overlays in contrasting shades are found on the forefoot and heel, while three perforated holes run down the center of the toebox. The photo doesn’t give us a complete detailed look, and his pants are covering the heel, so we don’t know what the setup looks like in the back.

In the fallout of the adidas Yeezy partnership, the brilliant minds behind the scenes have all been able to find new work across the footwear industry. Omar Bailey, former head of the Yeezy innovation lab, founded his own brand, FCTRY LAb. Cesar Idrobo, former head footwear pattern and sample maker, is now cozying up at Crocs as a senior manager of creative innovation. Joining Cesar are two more Yeezy alumni, Dingyun Zhang (who we just met up with at NYFW) and, of course, the legendary Steven Smith.
This new Crocs silhouette currently has no name, but we can expect Smith, Idrobo, and the rest of the Crocs team to provide more info in the coming months.
