The NBA’s latest signature sneaker star is here, and he’s challenging every convention of the industry. Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid is coming to buck the idea that big men can’t sell sneakers, and he’s doing it with an unconventional partner, Skechers, after leaving his deal with Under Armour that included a signature shoe that basically everyone forgot about. The Skechers SKX JE 1 is the first signature model from Skechers as the brand continues a push into the pro basketball space.

Embiid’s shoe features a reinforced mesh upper with a web of stability panels criss-crossing across the entirety of the upper like a spider on speed, presumably representing Embiid’s all-encompassing impact on the court. The same web-like pattern is added to the outsole for court traction. Skechers branding is added with a large S logo on the back half of the midsole, but is absent otherwise, with Embiid’s initials JE added on the tongue.

The shoe will debut in two colorways: a black and blue multi-color mix with black mesh, blue webbing, and a bright pink sockliner, plus a white and red pair with a white-on-white upper, red on the heel panel and half of the midsole, and black accents on the tongue and back half of the midsole.

It’s been a rough few years for Philadelphia basketball, but with Tyrese Maxey playing like an MVP candidate, a healthy team around him could be a recipe for a run in the Eastern Conference. Of course, those injury concerns are all about Joel Embiid, who, when healthy, is perhaps the league’s most dominant player. With his new Skechers on foot, let’s hope Embiid can stay healthy for the rest of the year and into the playoffs.
