Midnight Studios, founded by Shane Gonzales, merges high fashion designs with a punk/rock-and-roll aesthetic. These elements combine to challenge traditional fashion standards, and Vans, the iconic Cali-based footwear label, has taken notice. Giving Shane a shot at reimagining three Vans silhouettes, including the Old Skool, Authentic, and Sk8-Hi, the duo’s “Star Spangled Glamour” Collection fits right into Midnight Studios' punk-like aesthetic.
In a press release, Shane stated, “Collaborating with Vans is such a full circle moment for me. My friends and I grew up skating in Vans every day to and from school. Drawing on them, and thrashing them until they weren’t wearable anymore. When I got the opportunity to create my own collection, I wanted to re-imagine the 3 Vans silhouettes that bring me back to my childhood, and incorporate timeless all-American motifs into the design that I know will wear beautifully over time.”
On the collaborative Vans Authentic, we see the light grey/blue denim mixed with metallic silver hits and an included zipper on a lace cover. Vintage vibes ooze through with the sole unit's creamy look, while the Vans Old Skool gets a clean black/white makeover. On this pair, we see embroidered details that give off punk vibes along the toebox and midfoot, with the tongue tag hosting a co-branded logo between Vans and Gonzales. This pair maintains a more contemporary look with its white finish on the sole unit. Rounding out the collection is the black leather-finished Sk8-Hi. This pair features a belt buckle along the forefoot with other metallic details, including a lace set and eyestays, continuing the design language of Gonazales and his label.
The Shane Gonzales x Vans Star Spangled Glamour Collection will be released online on April 7th, 2023, through Vans and Midnight Studios. Releasing in men’s sizing, the retail price for all three pairs is currently TBD.
