Some names in sports need no introduction. In skateboarding, Hawk is at the top of the list. But while Tony Hawk made a name for himself on the vert ramp, his son, Riley Hawk, has carved out his own lane on the streets, with a pro board on Baker Skateboards and now, a new deal with adidas Skateboarding.
Hawk and adidas announced this week that Riley was the newest member of the Three Stripes skate team, joining industry heavyweights like Tyshawn Jones, Mark Gonzalez, Lucas Puig, Dennis Busenitz, and more. “This one means a lot to me,” Hawk wrote on Instagram. “Couldn’t be happier to be a part of adidas Skateboarding.”
Riley grew up in the San Diego area, making videos with his friends under the name Shep Dawgs. His parts in the Shep Dawgs video led to his recognition in the industry, and eventually, Andrew Reynolds reached out, putting Hawk on the Baker team and turning him pro in 2013. Bringing things full circle, Reynolds, who owns Baker Skateboards, got into the skate industry as a team rider for Birdhouse, the brand owned by Riley’s dad, Tony Hawk.
Now in his 13th year as a pro, Riley’s move to adidas is a major shift, with established shoe companies making up more and more of the skate industry’s financial baking by the year. Hawk was previously sponsored by Lakai, but after the brand was bought out from its original owners, Hawk left with the rest of the team.
After more than a year without a shoe sponsor, Riley launched his adidas partnership with a portrait wearing a Tre-Foil beanie and a photo of a stylish back smith grind in San Diego shot by Cody Moyles.
