Nike takes retros seriously. Beaverton takes pride in its continued technical advancements and product innovation, but when it comes to the classics, The Swoosh is still giving the people what they want, and that means playing the hits, bringing back timeless silhouettes like the Air Max 95, Dunks, Air Force 1s, and more Air Jordan retros than we can count. Sometimes, though, the decisions on which models to retro can be just as tough as developing a new model and take just as long.

This week, legendary Nike designer Frank Cooke gave Foamposite fans a reason to dream, repositioning a request for a retro of the Nike Total Air Foamposite Max on Instagram. The 1998 silhouette features a one-piece upper with a molded shield-like construction on top of a full-length Air Max unit underfoot. Worn by NBA superstar Tim Duncan, the metallic silver colorway Cooke reposted is the most iconic pair of the nearly-forgotten shoe.

Coming up on the 30th anniversary of the bulky hoops shoe, the sleek but bulky space-age silhouette fits in with the upcoming re-release of The Glove and Hyperflight. Not only that, but the entire “golden age” of Nike Basketball (the late ‘90s and early 2000s) is seeing a resurgence in popularity and it has definitely influenced the current slate of Nike basketball shoes. Most notably the ultra-hyped GT Future.

Following this article's publication, Cooke directly clarified what's going on with the Total Air Foamposite Max. "Working through it for the best results... Won't be 2026." Stay up with the Sole Retriever mobile app for any and every update on the shoe’s potential return.
