In the summer of 2020, Nike continued its promise of “Move to Zero” by introducing the “Space Hippie” collection. Four unique silhouettes were designed and packaged using recycled materials. Of the four models, the Nike Space Hippie 04 gained the most support from casual fans and sneakerheads alike. While many sneakerheads weren't pleased with Nike’s choice of colorways and frequency of release, the Space Hippie 04 is getting a facelift for 2022.
Dubbed the Nike Space Hippie 04 "Minor Surgery" edition, a slew of colorways are set to release this year using this new redesign. Still coming with over 25% of recycled material by weight and “Space Waste Yarn” comprised of 75% recycled content by weight, the shape remains the same on the 2022 edition. Major differences can be seen across the upper and even the finish on the midsole. Forgoing the loose pull tab, the redesign replaces it with a Nike branded opaque plastic backtab.
The tongue on the 2022 version also gets rid of the tongue tag, instead using a sewn on Swoosh. The lacing system is identical however the rope laces have been replaced by flat laces going forward. Moving to the midsole, the “Crater Foam” cushioning is still present. The original design was very textured, appearing crater-like with dents and imperfections throughout. Going forward, we will see the newly designed midsole being much smoother with the same “Nike Grind” speckles to appear much smaller. Unlike the original, the outsole will be a separate piece from the midsole, still using the iconic “Waffle” traction pattern.
