In skateboarding footwear, Nike SB has consistently pushed the envelope, blending innovative design with the rugged demands of skate culture. While the SB Dunk reigns supreme within the lineup for its iconic style and skateboarding functionality, Nike SB has continued exploring new territories. February 2024 marks the debut of the Nike SB Vertebrae, a silhouette that draws inspiration from the lesser-known Air Max Moto, a running shoe that first appeared in 2002.
The Nike SB Vertebrae features a blend of suede and canvas materials, providing a durable and breathable upper perfect for skateboarding's wear and tear. Eyes are immediately drawn to its midfoot "ribcage," reminiscent of the Air Max Moto's design. It is an aesthetic nod to human anatomy and enhances the shoe's structural integrity. This design choice aligns with the sneaker's namesake, emphasizing a connection to the body's skeletal structure.
The hidden eyestays are a thoughtful addition, offering protection against lace breakage during intense skate sessions, while double-row stitching ensures the upper can withstand the demands of skateboarding. Although specific details on the cushioning system have yet to be shared, this likely means that the sneaker’s foam midsole is cushioned with standard EVA foam. The sneaker is finished with a generative rubber outsole designed for exceptional grip.
The Nike SB Vertebrae will debut in two colorways on February 12, 2024, the Black Gum and Persian Violet, through Nike SB retailers and Nike online. The Summit White University Red pair will follow in March. Available in men’s sizing, the sneaker will retail for $85.
