Kobe Bryant's fifth signature sneaker with Nike, the Nike Kobe 5, is one of the Black Mamba's most popular sneakers with Nike. The Swoosh is bringing back the sneaker in Protro form in October 2024 with the X-Ray colorway. Following this return, the model will launch in a Lunar New Year-themed University Red colorway in January 2025, with this season seeing another colorway in the form of an LNY-themed Eggplant Kobe 5 Protro.
The Eggplant colorway is a nod to some of Nike Basketball's most beloved releases, incorporating a striking iridescent finish reminiscent of classic models like the recent LeBron 4 and retro of the classic Foamposite. The Kobe 5 Protro Eggplant features eggplant hues across the crinkled leather on the toe, midfoot, and tongue, offering a dynamic and glossy appearance. The sneaker includes black hits on the collar, sockliner, Swoosh, heel, and lace set, while golden accents enhance the aesthetic. This gold hue lines the Swoosh, takes over the Kobe sheath logo, and is part of the snake graphic wrapping around the midfoot. With 2025 being the Year of the Snake in Chinese mythology, it's clear that this pair is connected to Nike's LNY celebration. The design is completed with a black foam midsole and a contrasting clear rubber outsole, providing both style and functionality on the court.
The Nike Kobe 5 Protro LNY Eggplant will release on February 8, 2025, through Nike and select retailers online and in-store. Available in men’s and GS sizes, the sneaker will retail for $190 and $120, respectively.
